I think the hype-ers need to take a bit of responsibility for the "tech sucks and is useless" reaction -- they are directly related to the hyperbolic promises that they're making.

Uhh, the inclusion of companies in the index *is* investing in them. Any gains/losses they accrue while included in the index, stay in value of the index. This is why the indices are not actually reflective of the overall economy -- they can include only the market segments that are on the rise.
