Behind the clouds, a rainbow
Expression is an intention toward communication that can never be guaranteed.
The response belongs to the listener, but without expression, nothing unfolds.
I’m leaning toward playing the rhythm as written, but I’m unsure how mathematically accurate I can manage the polyrhythm. My goal is to make it musically convincing.
I usually don’t listen to recordings until I’ve made up my mind — perhaps not the smartest approach. I definitely had a coaching session with a professor who taught at the Manhattan School of Music in the mid-’90s, but I can’t remember what we did.
I am also working on this movement for an upcoming performance and have been asking myself the same question.
