My column this week. Alabama GOP leaders knew who to blame for the failure of a bill that would have canceled Public Service Commission elections: George Soros. Soros wasn't responsible for that; he's not the reason your power bills are high, and blaming him is a refusal to confront the real cause.

State Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, released a statement saying that the bill proposing to change the membership of the Alabama Public Service Commission (which regulates utilities in the state) from democratically elected to appointed by a partisan governor is dead. The motivation for the proposal was in response to two Democrats being democratically elected to Georgia’s Public Service Commission. “After environmental extremists funded by the most liberal Soros groups captured the Public Service Commission in Georgia, the importance of preventing the same happening in Alabama became an urgency,” Gudger said. Does the senator not realize that as soon as the name “Soros” comes out of one’s mouth, all their credibility goes up in smoke? Soros is the boogeyman name conservatives use to strike fear into their followers. Why is Senator Gudger so fearful of Alabama voters making their choices known?
