Another pathway for the situation to escalate is the closer we get to a certainty the US is going to strike, the stronger the incentives for Iran to launch a preemptive attack to fire as many missiles and cause damage before the launchers are suppressed. US isn't the only actor with agency here.

I haven't revisited it in a while, but maybe Peter Evans' book "Embedded Autonomy: States and Industrial Transformation"?

I've always been fascinated Clausewitz wrote about having the commander-in-chief be in the cabinet to keep the war "consonant with political objectives" but didn't, as far as I know, talk about Lazare Carnot running France's war as a civilian from Paris, with decent (though not total) success!

YES! When I gave a lecture on US military power and command of the commands, I told my students I was about to show them a photo encapsulating US military dominance, and asked them to guess what it was. No one ever correctly guessed “unloading a mobile Burger King from a C-17.”

Richard Frank describes how the Japanese carrier aviation graduating cohort in 1937 was 25 pilots…a very select, elite group, but nowhere near enough of a pipeline to fight an industrial war!

I’m very biased, but I think almost anything Barry Posen has done is really helpful for understanding war, and his first chapter of “Inadvertent Escalation” is in particular a really great piece for tying together grand strategic issues to operational and tactical actions.

I wonder if the prevalence of drones is also an indicator of how much attrition both sides have suffered? I could see the industrial process behind prepping small drones is paradoxically simpler than producing artillery, and certainly than more complex platforms like tanks, APCs, or aircraft.
