Canal+ Shutters Loss-Making South African Streamer Showmax
Canal+ has made a big early decision as the new owner of MultiChoice by axing loss-making streamer Showmax.
A head scratcher here from C+ - not the first of course - as it shuts down the main growth asset at the South African it just acquired. Was there no due diligence with Showmax's financials? deadline.com/2026/03/cana...

Yes, exactly. Sony is not a precarious company a la WBD, but the intrigue in Hollywood has always been about if/when Sony would get tired of its film and TV business. But the synergies have gotten better and the division is profitable, so things seem to be good enough. But everything has a price.

Paramount winning WBD is the worst possible outcome for the the American film and TV industries, and, well, the world. Netflix losing out means it stays the same for now, but the writing is on the wall that it wants a legacy studio. Sony Pictures is the weakest looking zebra on the savannah.

Netflix moves seven productions from UK to New Jersey
Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth in New Jersey is under development.
Interesting story about Netflix repatriating its runaway UK productions. The framing here is about getting WBD clearance, but there is also a more general Trumpian context here too. www.screenglobalproduction.com/news/2026/02...

Japan's premium video-on-demand sector achieved $7.2 billion in total revenue during 2025, marking a 15% year-over-year increase, a new report found.
A very helpful snapshot of the VOD market in Japan, where Netflix has the biggest share of revenues (from subs and ads), whereas Amazon has the highest number of users. Also some color on content preferences, with local leading the way. variety.com/2026/tv/glob...

The big chart from the story though is APV's Top 10 non-English works from the 'last year' (which somehow includes 2025 and 2026 releases). As usual, no transparency about metrics or other parameters, but interesting nonetheless. (2)

For those keeping track at home, this means Prime Video's 'populist literature' is competing with Netflix's 'gourmet hamburgers'. All other SVODs now need their own pithy USPs. Suggestions? Apple TV+: 'Netflix ca. 2015, but more expensive'. HBO: 'It's not TV, it's a spinoff of older TV'. Others?

German Industry Reacts After Government Sets Production Measures On Streamers & Networks
German producers are cautiously welcoming new local streaming requirements aimed at revamping the country's ailing production sector.
More color on the German AV law, its nuances and complexities, and some of the immediate pushback from the group representing platforms and TV companies. If the latter is angry, it is likely good news for the country's producers. deadline.com/2026/02/germ...
