Looked into it and I guess I underestimated Darkest Dungeon's influence
Hudson's Saturn-exclusive reimagining of Falcom's incredible Legend of Heroes 3 is a constant delight; a gorgeous, colourful, and breezy RPG bursting with adventure and enthusiasm:

Big if true, because my usual excuse for not getting around those games would have a 6 years expiry date (waiting for the series to finish)
it's "funny" that this article is going to be used by the most annoying people in the world as proof that human translators go too far and should all be replaced by AI when the complaint is specifically about word-for-word translations that don't go far enough
This will be on the test
Oh yeah in my delves I found this fanpage for Dragon Slayer IV which is written both in English and Japanese. It's the first time I see a bilingual fanpage like this so it's interesting I guess.
Also it has a fun chart about the Dragon Slayer continuity.
Oh my god yes, I didn't see it there because I had to click on the alt-text to show more.
Google led me to a Yahoo Japan repost that I had to check with Wayback Machine, that led me to the original source, where I searched with keywords.
Proverbial cave diving is fun so it's all good
So, in the last week, I've encountered 6 copies of PC Genjin 2 for PC Engine that all worked within the last year that are now all dead. It seems like this game specifically is failing in huge numbers. If you own a PC Genjin 2 Hucard, could you test for me? I'm trying to find still working copies!
Found the full interview. It's pretty long
(omfg my quoted post was so badly written)
The Dragon Slayer part doesn't mention The Caverns of Freitag. You too can have special knowledge
It's pretty good. My favorite part is the brain drain because staff veterans did so many amazing things after they left Falcom.
Be sure to check the pinned comment for a few corrections
"It's one big impenetrable dungeon that had people lost for a while"
Say less
The one I'm the most excited about is IV: Drasle Family. I don't know when I play it because I got a lot of Kawakami reading on my plate and an ongoing Wizardry playthrough but on paper it's defo something for me
Sometimes I'm too curious for my own good (furigana: I researched the Dragon Slayer series)
This week we have a rare King's Field interview from 2001 with FromSoftware producer Shinichiro Nishida! Taken from the Verdite Trilogy Perfect Guide, it covers the development of the first three PlayStation games. shmuplations.com/kingsfield/
Have to wonder how different RPG history would have been if this meeting went well
It's a noble pursuit

In the celebration of Nihon Falcom"s 45th anniversary, I can' recommended enough to watch this great video about the history of Falcom by @bowloflentils.bsky.social
Very instructive 🤓😎

pan of cute biscuits decorated to look like faces
same pan baked, a horrific fucked up mass of evil
how it started/how it's going
I don't know how this happened but the recommendation algorithm gives me cool devlogs now
I didn't even know it existed. It's fun seeing the little bits of oldschool Everquest in it. Now that's a game that will probably never need "Classic" servers
Hey, it's me - the person who responds to questions like "Can you write a feature about an ancient, untranslated, yet still active Japanese MMO you've never heard of before and hardly anyone's played?" with "Sure, I'll get started tomorrow!"

Also Gunparade March. Another one where I have probably barely scratched the surface
Another on my wishlist is ソウ楽都市OSAKA but also its game guide. I suspect I didn't plumb the depths of its systems
Unfortunately good scans for PS1/PS2/PSP Fromsoft games are still a rarity. Hopefully they get around King's Field in the next batches
Sadly it doesn't have all that much about JRPG and its "companion" JRPG book from Bitmap Books seems to not have the same level of quality
If you are interested in early RPG history, this book is great and freely downloadable crpgbook.wordpress.com
It contains references to other interesting books if you want to go further
