Male orangutan Berani was recently given a blanket that is actually a waterproof dog bed blanket, and is a made from a material that is new to him!
Orangutans use blankets for a variety of reasons – from using them as a head covering, as warmth or comfort, and in building a nest area.
Curly, our 12-year-old curl-crested aracari, is a sight to behold! Native to the southwestern Amazon Basin in South America, this small toucan species is known for its unique, glossy, black curly crown feathers and multi-colored bill. Find Curly in the South American Tropical Rainforest & Aviary.

Our male sibling green-winged macaws, Roberto and Blanco, are Zoo veterans! At age 32, they have lived the majority of their lives here, and today they celebrated their big day with fruit kabobs and a lot of attention!

Seven-year-old male Komodo dragon, Rinca, took advantage of the warm weather today! He was out exploring in his outdoor yard, before finally settling in for a nap!
And she also spent a good amount of time with her big ice block, frozen with avocado and banana (with a boiled egg on top!). And finally, the pièce de résistance – a new log! Happy Birthday Jade!
Sweet 17! A big birthday celebration for female Giant anteater, Jade, who was presented with some of her favorite treats. What better way to see her amazing tongue in action than by smearing yogurt on the viewing window of her indoor enclosure!

We’re sure going to miss Callista’s penchant for destruction! As we announced recently, Callista will be moving to the Nashville Zoo soon as she was recommended to pair with a male there for breeding opportunities.

Prior to joining the Zoo, Cassandra held leadership roles across San Francisco’s public and nonprofit sectors, including Chief Strategy Officer at SF Travel, Deputy Director of Property for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, and Chief of Staff at San Francisco City Hall. (4)
She has worked alongside staff, volunteers, and partners to support animal care and conservation efforts while strengthening collaboration across the organization and with partners throughout the City and the broader zoo community. (3)

Today is both Armadillo AND Hedgehog Day, how lucky are our Animal Rescue & Conservation Center is home to some amazing ambassadors of each! Maisie is a 3-banded armadillo, Chester is our 9-banded armadillo, and Aloe is a hedgehog.
Here’s what happens to a snowman in California – it becomes partially melted because of the sunny weather! Greater one-horned rhino Gauhati didn’t seem to mind, as he first investigated the oddly shaped snow creature, then proceeded to use his prehensile lip to see what all the fuss was about!
