I just had virtually the same conversation with my nephew (humanities edition) - he’s graduating college in May and had wanted to go into academia but says it’s totally infeasible with so many departments not taking grad students and funding drying up.
We’re losing an entire generation of scholars.

ICE agents reveal daily arrest quotas and surveillance app in rare court testimony
Under oath, officers said they were told to make eight arrests a day and given special tech to help choose ‘targets’
When a federal judge (finally) put ICE officers under oath, they admitted that they are given daily detention quotas and rely heavily on a Palantir-supplied AI tool to select targets, without warrants and without enough evidence to obtain one. They simply go into neighborhoods and round people up.

USS Columbia Eagle Mutiny: Anti War Rebellion at Sea
On this day, 14 March 1970, two sailors aboard the SS Columbia Eagle, carrying 10,000 tons of napalm for the US military in Vietnam, mutinied in protest at the war. Al Glatkowski and Clyde McKay had smuggled guns onto the ship which they used to hijack it and sail it to neutral Cambodia. But they never could have guessed what would happen next, as they became embroiled in a complex series of world events over which they would have no control. We spoke to Al for a podcast miniseries about the events, and this is how he recounted the start of the mutiny: "When we got the guns out to clean them, I got up and I told Clyde, 'I'll be right back. I'm going to go to the bathroom before we do this.' I looked in the mirror and I said to myself, 'You may not live through this. These may be your last few minutes.' "I will never ever be able to see or look my children in the face when they ask me, ''What did you do to stop the war, Dad?'' You will be able to say that you did your duty to stop it. You did your best to stop it.' I walked around, turned around, went out the door, got the gun and said, 'Let's move.'" Listen to Al tell his and Clyde's incredible story in our podcast episodes 21-24. this gull injured its leg & wing this week, grounding it at Westerly for the last few days. Yesterday, Darius secured and transported it to the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center for proper care after his shift.

The Founders, by Jimmy Soni
I’m reading this book about the rise of PayPal and on the one hand it’s kind of a standard successful-innovatorporn business book, but on the other hand oh my god Elon and Thiel and David Sacks were such gobsmaking dumbfucks and the ghastly details are all just sitting there for the reader to see.

Our hearts are with Michigan and Temple Israel
We are not alone, and we refuse to be divided from our neighbors.
"We know that some in power will use this attack to fan the flames of division — antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab bigotry. But our communities must remain in solidarity."
Read a message from Bend the Arc CEO @jamieberan.bsky.social after yesterday's attack at Temple Israel in Michigan.

For many Black women, the Target boycott is not over. It may never be.
A faith leader announced the end of a yearlong “Target fast,” but many Black women who helped launch the boycott say the movement wasn’t his to call off.
Better article re: the #TargetBoycott
"The company confirmed to USA Today that it’s making no new commitments or reversals on its DEI policy."
and
"Black women across the country are reminding people that they started the boycott — and they’ll decide when it ends."

Mad as a March Hare
Over on my research blog, Gemaecce.com, I experiment with creating animals in the style of those on Pictish carved stones
In March, hares box—'mad as a March hare' is something I grew up hearing. They are not, of course, mad—it's the females punching away the males when they get uppity in spring. But trying to *draw* boxing hares in the style of Pictish carved stones *will* drive a person round the bend...

GOP plans marathon debate, but SAVE America Act unlikely to cross the finish line
“I can't guarantee an outcome on this legislation,” Thune said.
Republicans are setting the stage for some high dudgeon political theater next week, planning a multi-day, overnight debate on the suppressive SAVE America Act.
But even after the bill's backers and opponents duke it out, the spectacle will likely end in the proposal's death on the Senate floor.

The SAVE America Act is a voter suppression scam. It would take away the rights of working people to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
The Senate must reject this bill.
