Ink, Coffee, and Regrets

@inkcoffeeregrets

A podcast for the curious, candid, and creatively unhinged. Writing, reading, world-building, & the weird emotional terrain between author and audience—with sardonic wit, philosophical detours, and no patience for genre clichés.

Depends on if you are going to be realistic with physics. Traditionally a long and short would be best. Your long was used to fight, the short to block and defend. Two longs is cumbersome and impractical. Two shorts is more realistic too.

So... In preparation for my next Podcast, let me ask you a question.

Before, on a previous show, I asked, "Why do we write?"

So now I ask, "Why DON'T we write, or what KEEPS you from writing?"

Not just you, but also in general. What to you think keeps people who have stories from trying?

So the technical issues are resolved and there is a new Mic in place. I will be recording my March 1st show tomorrow and posting it.

No script at all this time, people. Feeling better about my voice so going for broke. :-)

In light of what seemed like either my comment being taken wrong, or something. I removed it. Apologies for any offense.

Question. As you improve as a writer... say you get to a point where you are a best selling writer. Would you go back and look at your early work, clean it up and then reissue it?

I feel for you. I have Valley Fever. Not quite the same thing, but related. I have to be careful every time I get even the mildest cold, because just like that (*snapping my finger*) it can turn into pneumonia and result, for me, in an unexpected stay at a lovely medical facility.

"Sedaka's Back" was the very first album I owned when I was a kid. My mom bought it for me and I must have listened to it too many times, because it "disappeared" until 1986. Not sure whatever happened to that record, but I loved it. He was still my go-to for "happy music".

Neil Sedaka is my second cousin. He and my mom grew up together. Perhaps they’ll connect again. Neil Sedaka, Singing Craftsman of Memorable Pop Songs, Dies at 86.

Writing is, IMHO, the ultimate catharsis. You have so many avenues in a single medium. You write journals to work out your issues with yourself, you write non-fiction to offer warnings to others, and you write fiction to take the people that offended you and exact justice. :-D

Tell me about some good writer's contests that are out there. Looking for contests that offer writers of a variety of different genres to submit their works.

100%

But it can be hard sometimes. Sometimes you can get addicted to the pain, and that is the hard part about letting go. Like Gotye says in the song, "Someone That I Used to Know"... "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness..."

Thanks for posting this and the reminder it brings. :-)

Do you, yes you, specifically YOU, think that a romance, short story, written entirely in a manner that uses cliches, overused tropes, and romantic hyperbole, would sell, with the understanding that it is written as a work of jest?

Good selection. I wish I could get my wife to like Princess Bride, though. I love it, she hates it.

My March 1st show may be delayed. Having some technical issues. The irony there is that my day job is as a Tech Support guy. Been in the industry since 1985 and still have moments were I question what they hell I am doing. :-D

How do you remove politics from your day? How do you get through the day without exposing yourself to politics or people that want to shove it down your gullet?

Funny. Even though I understand his connection to and involvement in the Church of Scientology, I still like L. Ron Hubbard's writing with the book (not that travesty of a movie) Battlefield Earth being one of my favorite novels.

Any thoughts?

That "Live, Love, Laugh" thing got so old, so fast.

It seemed like everyplace I visited had some variation of that somewhere. I even made a "Die, Hate, Cry" sign that I had in my office at a previous job, until HR made me remove it.

The image reminded me of some of psychedelic images and posters I remember seeing as a kid. Tune in, Turn on, Drop out.

Apologies if I offended, it was not my intent.

I've been to a few places like that. I recall a trip through Louisiana on a connecting road. Later I was talking to a waitress about my trip and that road and she said, "Oh, Honey, no one drives that road. I am glad you made it safely."

The south seems to have a lot of those roads.

Personally... this is the best time to write fiction. It allows a level of catharsis... and it allows us to, in our own, sometimes demented way, decompress.

You can do some crazy things to politicians in fiction that you cannot in real life!!! :-)

I have told my Wife and Son that mine are not to be touched by anyone but me until after my passing. They are, at least for me, my place to be honest about everything and unburden myself without the potential for misunderstanding or debate.

For me it's a place for... I suppose, catharsis.

Right. It's a "Time Capsule" of you. Someplace where you document your life, concerns, dreams, issues, and views on life and the people around you. Then, when you have passed, others read it and see that little slice of you.

But then the question is. Are you writing it for you, or them? :-)
