I think the adage ‘I hate writing, but I love having written’ sums it up nicely. I really don’t think good writing can come without hardship, struggle etc.
I’m not sure how ‘hidden’ Slice & Dice is now, at least in roguelike circles, but it certainly hasn’t broken into the mainstream.
