The Arctic overturning circulation: transformations, pathways and timescales
Abstract. The Arctic is the northernmost terminus of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and is an important source of the densest waters feeding its lower limb. However, relatively little...
🌊Where and how is dense water in the Arctic formed? In our new paper, we decompose the Arctic overturning circulation (ArMOC), the northernmost part of the AMOC. Check it out 🔽

Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to each year from 1979 to 2024 as shown with thin lines in colors from purple to white. There is large daily variability, but a long-term decreasing trend during all months of the year. A seasonal cycle is also visible in this region.
Ice-free conditions continue in the Barents Sea region of the #Arctic Ocean. This is one area that has observed some of the largest losses of ice over the last few decades... compare the older years (dark/purple lines) to today!

How will a sudden change in the function of the ocean circulations impact Iceland, Europe, and the world?
We had a great panel at the Arctic Circle Assembly 🌊🧪
It was a scientific discussion on the likelihood, uncertainties, and possible consequences if the large ocean circulation were to shift.

Atlantification drives recent strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation
A less ice-covered Arctic shifts dense water formation northward, strengthening the Arctic Ocean overturning circulation.
The Arctic Ocean acts to stabilize the AMOC
New paper in #ScienceAdvances by researchers from @bjerknes.uib.no and @oxuniearthsci.bsky.social showing how ongoing Atlantification and sea ice loss leads to a strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation.

Very cool article about Kjetil Våge’s ROVER project and how the Nordic Seas could help to decide the fate of the AMOC.

Buoys on Expedition in the Arctic Ocean
Two instrument-laden buoys ("Knoll" and "Tott") were recently released north of Svalbard, soon to disappear beneath the ice.
In our project "Overturning circulation in the new Arctic" (ArMOC) we have deployed two Argo floats in the Arctic (north of Svalbard). A short story on the mission of Knoll & Tott here:
