I think it’s great you’re willing to do that and reward the dialogue and honesty, if nothing else. I often found even the toughest professors were human and willing to accept that sometimes, things are tough. It’s because of those individuals I was able to succeed and thrive in my current career.

I guess I never centered my sense of community on that app - I don’t think Bluesky does that either outside of the fact it is smaller and newer and not (yet) monetized. I think that’s a good argument for why you left it behind yourself but not for animosity towards those who have not.

It’s so nice to see them make a show that is actually well thought through and not just shoving shock value in to the gills. This is exactly the story I wanted to come out of this world, it’s so good.

On the plus side, the temper-tantrum he threw over the rebuke from the court was briefly very entertaining.

Why? I definitely have appreciated the reset to curate a different timeline over here. However despite the stupid over there, it still possess the length of existence and volume of diverse accounts to create worthwhile interactions that do not happen in this sphere.

I know I’m a peripheral character in this situation but please feel free to ping me if you need someone to talk to. Keeping my paws crossed for ya.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, that feeling of lost direction and believing you can’t start over is terrifying.

I’m not trying to take away from the reality of that feeling, but give it time to pass and reach out when you need to. That’s something this community is genuinely good at.

And to be clear this is not an indictment of my mom’s parenting. A lot of the confidence and ability to make decisions I had as a kid came from this very act. I’m grateful for it, not resentful of it.

For all his foibles in reasoning, and there are many, Jonathan Haidt has been doing a lot of good publications on this and has collaborated with a lot of very interesting individuals experimenting with more free play and child autonomy, worth looking into if you’re interested.

Realistically, as tragic as child injury and death is as a whole, we used to be much more… accepting of it as a reality in society. The advent of helicopter parenting, trends in social norms, and a shift to greater parental culpability has led to a drastic change in parental behavior and strategy.

There’s been a lot of talk on this lately. Some just talk, some actual research. I’m in the camp that there has very much been a change in what is expected of parents (socially and legally) with regards to harms that may come to their children.

They vaccinated me against things I’d never even heard of when I did multiple practicums in Africa. I’ll be ok. But man it sure is stupid.

Collective memory is non-existent. We don’t live in an age of oral tradition anymore, which ironically has better durability than Wikipedia.

Also the way in which information exists now is unprecedented and rapidly evolving. I choose to be cautiously optimistic rather than despairing.

In the meantime there’s a new ‘exposure risk case’ within biking distance of my house every day so, this is fun.

I think I originally felt the authoritarian revenge sentiment in me. More recently I think I’ve accepted that it’s not gonna get better until we fuck around and find out, and are reminded as a society why these things actually matter and aren’t in fact just a political hockey puck to bat around.

By comparison when my mom was busy she’d be like ‘just go walk around the woods’ and my sister and I would get lost and stagger home after dark and she’d be like ‘oh, you’re late for dinner’.

Instead of latchkey, they all just hang out at work with us. I think part of it is that we’re far more protectionist about children’s safety than we used to be. Now it is socially criminal to let your ten year old be alone in the house for any length of time.

Not sure when it trended, but it hit a hard stop during covid with online class and staggered classroom operations which stayed in effect. I don’t know how my colleagues do it. They’ll get a notice the night before from their school system ‘surprise, you have your kids tomorrow!’

Home finally and recovering. But my god my trip to Alaska was incredible. That was a once in a lifetime experience and I am so glad I went.

Long journey home, so I’ve been killing time taking pictures of cool vapor formations. The bright moon did neat things to the Cascades.

Yeah, it’s a pretty apt comparison. Especially when the dogs test you and decide to do whatever they want lol.
