"Political Representation Gaps and Populism" has been making waves on twitter after being featured on Marginal Revolution

Using data on local politicians (N=9000) + voters (N=28.000) from my article in Politica with @mvinaes.bsky.social in Denmark, this does not seem to be the case.

How do challenger parties—those without prior governing experience—gain access to executive power? In our paper out now in @thejop.bsky.social, @mvinaes.bsky.social, @jacobnyrup.bsky.social, and I explore whether simply holding legislative office helps them join government. Brief 🧵👇

Now, the opposition have a hard time signaling accommodation, bc it might get read as cheap talk. But if Scholz went full Frederiksen in office, I think restrictionist immmigration voters would notice. He would also scare of some voters to the greens etc., so effect on SPD prospects hard to say.

Thanks for a great write-up. Also helped me think about where I disagree with the party politics literature here. I don’t think niche parties have a lock on their issue, and most voters are not single issue. So accommodation, if credible, works.

Ford, Bush og Trump benådede politisk allierede der havde begået kriminalitet for at hjælpe det Republikanske parti.

Altså mere cute at benåde sin søn!

Derudover er der gode argumenter for at benåde Hunter. He was cooked!

it’s fascinating that left-NIMBYs will just nonchalantly say “the private sector will never release enough homes to allow prices to fall” as if it’s some universally known truth…

when in reality, that’s exactly what happened in Austin and Minneapolis

It looks the House popular vote margin will be ~3%, almost exactly the same as 2022. The seat count will also be very close to unchanged. House Republicans also again outperformed Trump (& Senate Republicans).

In terms of the US debate, we can of course not be sure that our results travel. In fact, there might be good reasons for why they do not.

However, the results should invite more nuanced reflections on whether local control can be harnessed as a force for more housebuilding.

These results challenge the CW on whether local control drive the housing affordability crisis. At a minimum, our results have two implications.

1. Local control can *sometimes* lead to more housing.

2. Local control leads to more housing in DK by shaping city interest.

In line with this, we find that the effect is concentrated:

*among jurisdictions which became physically much larger (area)
*where tax base volatility was reduced
*on permits where there is a large fiscal upside

We think this is because small local gov'ts are more inclined to use housebuilding to attract new taxpayers.

For small muni's, it is easier to attract new tax payers (they are closer), and their tax base is more susceptible to negative shocks (e.g., on local employment).
