Dying Victims Productions For the second year in a row, Dying Victims Productions takes the top spot. In 2025, the label released an overwhelming number of records across heavy metal, speed, and related underground styles, with remarkably few missteps. More than any other label this year, Dying Victims felt deeply connected to the underground, actively shaping its sound.

⚔️🌹 Tolkien Tuesday – The Shieldmaiden of the Mark 🌹⚔️ Éowyn has always been one of the rawest, most powerful characters in Middle-earth. She wasn’t born to be a warrior, she was born into a cage made of gold and expectations. A noblewoman told to smile, sing, and wait while the men rode to glory. And she said: nah, absolutely not. Éowyn is the quiet storm in the Golden Hall. The woman who trained in secret, who learned swordplay behind closed doors, who watched everyone she loved march into danger while she stayed behind with nothing but fear and fire in her heart. Her whole life has been loss and duty and longing for a different fate. So when war finally called her name? She didn’t hesitate. She rode straight into the Pelennor with a sword in her hand and death in front of her. That’s Smoulder energy to the core. Smoulder sounds like Éowyn’s heartbeat when she pulls off the helm. Epic doom riffs that feel like destiny cracking open. Trad metal melodies that hit like a war cry. Lyrics about rage, courage, sorrow, and women in armor refusing to be sidelined by anyone. King, Nazgûl, or prophecy. This isn’t soft fantasy. This is doom-soaked steel, sung with the kind of voice you hear right before a tyrant falls. Smoulder is the band Éowyn would blast while sharpening her blade in the dark, whispering, “I fear neither death nor pain.” She didn’t just break prophecy. She broke the damn mold. And Smoulder is the soundtrack to every step of that rebellion.

📸 Obscure Metal Monday ⚔️🇯🇪 Legend – Death in the Nursery (1981) This week, we’re taking a look at a band from the edges of the NWOBHM map: Legend, from the island of Jersey. They weren’t surrounded by the big-city scenes of London or Birmingham, and that bit of distance helped shape a sound that feels a little different from the usual early ’80s heavy metal blueprint. Released in 1981, Death in the Nursery sits in a unique spot within the NWOBHM movement. It has the classic style and energy of the era, but there’s a darker, more dramatic tone running through it that sets it apart. The riffs feel urgent, the solos hit with emotion, and the vocals bring a slightly theatrical edge that gives the whole record its own character. It’s heavy metal, but with a moodier and more personal touch. Legend never gained much attention outside of hardcore collectors and tape traders, but that underground status is part of what makes them fun to revisit now. They didn’t sound like Iron Maiden or Saxon, and they didn’t try to chase what anyone else was doing. They just made honest, expressive heavy metal from their corner of the world, and Death in the Nursery is their strongest statement. Like many bands from the era, Legend eventually faded out once the NWOBHM wave cooled down, but this album remains one of the more interesting hidden gems from that time.
