Professor Brinkley Messick left behind deeply researched, lovingly crafted, and beautifully written books. But perhaps his most enduring legacy remains his decency.

I wrote the entry on Sayyid Sharif-i Jurjani for EI3 Online and it has just been published. I am very grateful to the editors of EI3 at Brill. The article was supposed to be just 1000 words, but they accepted a significantly longer piece.

My regular suggestion: At the end of the semester why not reach out to someone whose work you taught and let them know? These days we have very little idea who teaches our stuff and in what contexts. It takes almost no time and can really make their day.

My view: academics should never assume their βreader is restedβ enough to tolerate blue sentences. Most academic blue sentences are really quite bad sentences. And they are certainly not where your important point belongs. Your academic writing will be better if you strive to avoid blue sentences.
Absolutely
