A clump of frogspawn in a murky pond.
Top right corner sits a Goldfinch, with a fawn back and breast, black and yellow on the wings and a red face. It sits on some brown Teasel heads. Below, another Goldfinch takes flight, showing the yellow of the wings as it flies towards the fence behind the birds.
Success! Finally had Goldfinches on the Teasel in the garden! 6 of them counted for @bto-gbw.bsky.social this morning, along with the first frogspawn of the year!

I did this training a couple of years ago and it really helped me to identify the birds I encounter in the garden, and when out for walks.

February brings us closer to the return of bumblebees β you might be lucky enough to see some this month π€
Bumblebee queens emerge from hibernation in spring. Keep your eyes peeled this month for early emerging Tree and Buff-tailed bumblebees π
Have you spotted your first bumblebee of 2026?
Ciwt! @bto-gbw.bsky.social
Not surprised to see House Sparrow in top spot for our @bto-gbw.bsky.social last year (100% recording rate!).
Such an easy way to get involved with citizen science, and knowing that our records are making a difference (we had Greenfinch for the first time last year!)

A Spotted Flycatcher perches on a piece of wood. White writing over the green background reads: Rivers vital for Spotted Flycatchers according to new research. Image credit bottom left reads: Spotted Flycatcher by Edmund Fellowes/BTO.
1/ Spotted Flycatchers are in trouble, declining by 92% in the UK between 1967 and 2020. New work led by @cateden91.bsky.social & involving BTO has revealed the importance of rivers for the survival of this Red-listed migratory species. β¬οΈ #Ornithology

We're looking for some help to classify the final images for our project with Mammal Web. You'll be asked to identify species in gardens during our NE pilot study to help monitor garden wildlife using camera traps.
Plus there's a chance of winning a camera trap. Each image counts as one entry!
Back out doing some @btobirds.bsky.social #BirdRinging this morning. Nice variety on a steady morning, and the woofs did a good job supervising as always. Thanks to @arcanelove.bsky.social and @hughhanmer.bsky.social for running the session.
All birds ringed under licence.
We saw one on Christmas Eve at Knapdale while staking out the loch for Beavers (who remained elusive)
I knew they were, but didn't realise it was just them! Had a couple of Emus at the Zoo - found a Blackbird nest lined with them once!
Not that I'm biased, but @bto-gbw.bsky.social is the easiest to take part in! You don't even need to leave the house! All you need is a garden, a little bit of time and basic garden bird ID.
Also, research on health and welfare done in zoos with captive animals has helped to save species from extinction in the wild, and reintroductions using captive bred animals continue to support wild populations around the world.
Zoos not only give "laypeople" the chance to learn and connect with species they might not ever see in the wild, but encourages them to support conservation efforts around the world.

First bird of 2026 was a Woodpigeon stomping around our holiday garden in the Lakes. Having found some seed in the cupboard, we put some out to see who else we might attract. Very sad this isn't my @bto-gbw.bsky.social garden, clocked up 12 species in a short time. @hughhanmer.bsky.social #UKBirding
Who says Christmas is just for human families? Today we met up with Freya's dad and brother (Wish's half brother and nephew). Here they are after our beach walk taking in some WW2 history in north Cumbria #BorderColliesOnTour
Currently up West Coast of Scotland and tripping over them! π
Was not expecting to spend Christmas Eve in glorious sunshine! Having a fab few days up north exploring, some new places and some I've been to many years ago!
#Birds seen today include Tysties, Hoodies and Loons, but the Beavers are still staying hidden! @hughhanmer.bsky.social
