An alleged photograph of the "Fiordland moose". Not native to New Zealand, moose were released there over a century ago for hunters. While reports of them gradually tapered off, occasional sightings have led people to believe that moose may have established a colony there
There are dozens of cases of cryptid lost media, photos, videos and audio recordings of animals that may or may not exist. I investigated over forty of these cases to analyze if this evidence might be found one day, or if the whole thing was a hoax.

In 1887, an Iowan man named Lee Corder was accosted by a giant serpentine flying creature. The animal's scales were said to glisten in the sunlight. It landed with a thud nearby, but Corder was too scared to follow it. A local newspaper said that he was a man who could be trusted

Duboisia santeng is a rare example of a prehistoric animal which was both named after a cryptid, AND was earnestly connected with that cryptid by its discoverer. Eugene Dubois named it after the santeng, an alleged tiny buffalo with chilli-shaped horns.
A friend of diver Jacques Cousteau once reported seeing a fish with a red and white checkerboard pattern while on a dive. Cousteau thought he didn't get enough oxygen- until he saw the same fish on another dive weeks later.

You may have seen this photo of the Myakka skunk ape before. But you may not know of the mysterious backstory it has, and the letter that came with it. From a scientist who may not exist to a disease carrying ape, I analyzed the strange story of the skunk ape photos.

A hunter encounters a living ground sloth in South America. One government administrator, RamΓ³n Lista, claimed to have encountered one that shrugged off several bullets. He compared it to a giant pangolin with hair instead of scales
It'd be cool if the history channel covered the death of Kenyan leader Koitalel. During a negotiation with the British leader Richard Meinertzhagen, he was betrayed and killed in an ambush. According to local historians, Koitalel's head was eaten by a nandi bear
The dodo, passenger pigeon, and great auk are well known symbols of extinction. But are they really extinct? There have been dozens of mysterious sightings of these birds well after they're thought to have disappeared, and even some alleged photo evidence.

A trailer for a fifth season of Monsterquest has dropped, 15 years after the show went off the air. Unfortunately I was not a fan of what we've seen so far, and this video explains why.

English translation of the article here. Before screaming "Con rit!" or "Scolopendra!", It should be noted that the Great white shark seem to have been called μμ°μμ΄(Saeu-sangeo) locally, so there is a possiblity that the reporter had simply mistaken this for μμ°(Saeu, "Shrimp").

A fantastic old article about bigfoot from the author Patrick Reynolds
In the 1930s Rolf Rosenkvist and his dad were near the Eman River of Sweden when they spotted a massive eel 15 feet (4.5m) by torchlight. They tried and failed to catch it, though a later hunt succeeded. Villagers discarded it because it tasted bad.
AWESOME!
So, to my mind this should be classed as a cryptid as its existence is based on anecdotal evidence. Any cryptozoologists want to be in with a chance of actually discovering a new species for once should go looking for it. @bestcryptids.bsky.social
