In my small hometown of 5,000 people, most folks running for city council, school board, etc. don't actually need to campaign that much cause we all know each other. But they still do campaign cause 5,000 people is still A LOT.

I have a job, I need to research the candidates and their policies, figure out what makes sense, and then show up and vote. But parties have a job to field candidates in every race, and candidates have a responsibility to earn votes by not sucking shit.

Yes, also voting access, better civics education, there's all kinds of stuff we can do to get those numbers up broadly, but even then there's no guarantee any of those people will vote for a specific candidate once they participate!

Idk the exact number, but our nationwide voting rate is what, 30%? Certainly doesn't even crack 50% I don't think. When that much of the population doesn't participate in electoral politics *every year* then it's absolutely on candidates to pull those people in.
