Jack Johnson and Stephen Colbert Perform 'Sleep Through the Static'
Jack Johnson and Stephen Colbert Perform 'Sleep Through the Static' YouTube video by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Jack Johnson. Such a beautiful lyricist. His war protest:

"Shock and awful thing to make somebody think
That they have to choose pushing for peace supporting the troops"

"We say anytime, anywhere, just show your teeth and strike the fear
Of God wears camouflage, cries at night and drives a Dodge"

FWIW, I’ll take dystopian sounding voice over dystopian actual words and/or unintelligible.

This isn’t any endorsement of what DHS is saying, just a condemnation of LAPD completely screwing up their supposedly scripted announcements over and over and over and over and over …

NAL, but if it's intelligible and initiated by law enforcement, I think it can give a lawful order.

Whether order is lawful is another question!

Note: Message to press is a "request" not an order.

Someone got similar recordings last week, automated and human. Both had weird mispronunciations. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Pacific Palisades' 97-year-old newspaper closed after the fire. Now it's staging a comeback After closing in the aftermath of the devastating Palisades fire, the coastal community's nearly 100-year-old paper is preparing to make a remarkable comeback

Amid typical news biz headlines, this is so wholesome and heartening:

"The extensive archives survived the fire, and Tim Schneider hopes that they can help return photos and revive cherished memories for community members who lost personal memorabilia to the smoke and flames."

Good luck Pali Post!

Why Is Paramount Hiring So Many Men With Troubled Pasts? Paramount has hit a trend of hiring men with pasts that involve misconduct, from Max Landis and Brett Ratner to Johnny Depp and John Lasseter.

One of the highlights of working at Paramount during peak of #metoo movement was coming into office and hearing, "Hey, this creep is gone" ... "Hey, that creep is gone."

Article indicates this reversal isn't "statement about second chances" just hiring people who are now cheap. πŸ₯΄

Sorry you're having to deal with this. Hope you're doing OK.

You're not alone. I'm with a US press freedom org. I'll let some international counterparts know and ask about Canadian orgs. Don't hesitate to reach out. (Your DMs seem closed, likely for good reason, but that may slow responses.)

I haven't said anything about this before, bc in the grand scheme of horrors this only rates as an inconvenience, but since others are experiencing it:

Just three days after CBP arrested me for filming them outside Broadview on 9/27, my TSA Pre & Global Entry were suspendedβ€”and so were my wife's.

How Journalists Are Reporting From Iran With No Internet After strikes killed senior Iranian officials, Iran cut off internet access. Journalists are relying on satellite links, encrypted apps and smuggled footage to report from inside the country.

Empowers people to vote for what they want instead of against what they fear, which encourages candidates to appeal to that and build consensus instead of tribalism to win plurality.

Granted, almost every system favors well financed and well connected. Where have you seen RCV differ from baseline?

Struggling Democrats need to drop out of California’s crowded governor race or risk a GOP win, party leader warns A big field of candidates makes it possible for a Republican to be elected governor. California's Democratic Party leader told unviable candidates to bow out.

The first op-ed I ever wrote was during the Gray Davis recall/Schwarzenegger election, saying we should have instant runoff voting (aka ranked choice voting).

25 years later, we're still stuck with political parties making a hot mess of everything.

I'm also good with approval voting. Look it up.

Every poll like this should ask respondents to point out Iran on a map, and we should be able to sort answers based on who answered correctly or not.

Would be telling how many of those who approve of Trump's actions even know where Iran is. Or Venezuela, etc.

That's just one example of many reductive headlines. Kuwait, UAE, lots of headlines from lots of places right now that may only be seeing the start.

03.03.2026 04:11 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Ahhh, I can see what you mean. I'm looking at a lot of international feeds and seeing headlines about Kuwait, Lebanon, UAE, etc. Certainly U.S. troops too. But this wasn't intended as some U.S. centric post. Just remarking on headlines diminishing how bad this will get.

03.03.2026 04:09 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Headlines are counting off narrow categories like 6 US troops, or numbers in countries besides Iran.

They all count, as do the hundreds (thousands?) of innocent people already lost IN Iran. Media is reaching for numbers they can verify, but the reality is this is surely so much worse already.

Headlines talking about US military standing out to me right now. They might be accurate, but they also feel naive.

03.03.2026 03:59 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm only referring to the way headlines are treating it. Indeed, hundreds (thousands?) are dead and every loss is horrible.

03.03.2026 03:58 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Each is a tragedy. A lot of news headlines are counting off in small numbers, which is how it felt early Covid. One death here. A couple there. The reality is that way more people have likely been killed than we realize. Surely hundreds of innocent people already killed.

03.03.2026 03:56 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Watching headlines about Iran with single-digit death counts feels like the early days of Covid.

Each death is heartbreaking. And you also get the feeling that soon, this moment will feel like simpler times when we could count the losses on two hands.

DC journalists have a golden opportunity.

Just say something like "since they will be honoring an avowed enemy of free speech and a free press, I will not be attending the Correspondents' Association dinner this year."

It's telling how many will not, even when handed to them on a silver platter.

In particular, it's been good at IDing problems/weaknesses. Also figuring out what to shorten. Proposed solutions can realllly miss the mark. But like a good editor, it can help identify issues in my writing and debate solutions.
