Pilckem Ridge 2013. In addition to well-developed trenches, less elaborate ones were also found. Some (first 2 photos) from the early months of trench warfare. The others (last 2 photos) were more temporary and served for troop supply for the July 31, 1917 attack.

An aerial view of Remy Sidings, a group of Casualty Clearing Stations which made history, both military and scientific. Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is witness of more than four years of violent warfare in the Ypres Salient #WW1 #History
A very clear picture of Hawthorn Redoubt
The archaeological features we uncovered in Messines in 2012 were exceptional. However, what has stayed with me the most was the discovery of the mortal remains of a missing soldier. It turned out to be a defining moment in the course of my professional journey, a focus I still maintain to this day.
Very poignant remembrance ceremony at the Hawthorn Craters in memory of the men of ALL nations who fought and died across the battlefields of Hawthorn Ridge & Beaumont Hamel

Granite demarcation stone with a French helmet on top: these marked the limit of the German advance in 1918. Taken with a Pentax ME Super camera
Page from my photo album, c.1996. A granite demarcation stone in the Ypres Salient. βHere the invader was brought to a standstill 1918β
Another 1981 snapshot of Newfoundland Memorial Park, Beaumont Hamel, Somme. These are the German front line wire pickets. I think they'd not long removed the barbed wire because the sheep were getting caught on it.
We always love a trench sign
