USDM Hot Topic March 5, 2026: Florida is 100% in moderate drought or worse for the second week in a row. Severe drought or worse remained at 87.54%. Extreme drought rose from 67.39% to 70.51%. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index, which is a number that represents the extent and severity of drought, increased from 355 to 358 of 500. Florida is completely covered in moderate to extreme drought. These conditions are hindering firefighting efforts in the Big Cypress National Preserve, where the National Fire has burned 35,000 acres as of March 5.

USDM Hot Topic February 26, 2026: Nebraska. Dryness or drought increased from 94.63% to 95.91% in Nebraska this week. Moderate drought or worse grew from 66.73% to 77.02%. Severe drought expanded from 21.41% to 26.37%. Extreme drought increased slightly from 4.61% to 4.79%. The Drought Severity and Coverage Index rose from 187 to 204 of 500. While parts of Nebraska got snow last week, that moisture provided only temporary relief from overall dryness in the state. This has affected winter wheat, which was rated just 24% in good to excellent condition.

Dryness or drought worsened across all categories in the Lower 48 this week: from 72.58% to 73.73% for abnormal dryness or worse, 46.6% to 48.58% for moderate drought or worse, 21.55% to 22.56% for severe drought or worse, 4.81% to 5.99% for extreme drought or worse, and 0.13% to 0.15% for exceptional drought.
