This also applies to gender. Not only because of extreme & violent sexism & misogyny - that has become a focus & central to discussions of ethics, care & support - also exists in the system & mainstream, but because of gendered Islamophobia & misogynoir, partic in a field that centres whiteness. 6/
It is ironic as the far right which has largely motivated such calls for care and support is also treated as the source and engine of the racism (or 'hate') they oppose, not the system, state and institutions of power many see as partner and protector. 5/
This also includes universities they are demanding more policies, controls and support from. It particularly applies to Muslims, racialised and migrantised researchers who have been securitised and also targeted by the far right that so many now focus on. 4/
This has been an interesting and important development, but has, I'd argue, largely ignored or minimised the dangers posed by the very security state and agencies, as well as counterextremism and counterterrorism stakeholders they work with and provide academic legitimacy for to some researchers. 3/
I really want colleagues engaged in researching 'extremism' and other politicised and contentious topics, as well as methods. I particularly want to encourage those working on ethics, care and support in far right studies, terrorism studies and P/CVE. 2/

It's fascinating to watch cooler Labour heads like Sadiq Khan and Andy Burnham say that comparing the Greens and Reform together is a terrible tactic.
Yet Labour ministers are hourly on shows keeping up the same narrative.
The Green Party and Reform are completely the opposite!
The racialisation of the working class has always been core to reactionary politics
E.g. mainstream elites were quick to blame/praise the white WC for both Trump & Brexit despite data providing a different picture

Democracy is a conspiracy unless only racism is represented.
The political and media establishment, as well as far right experts need to reflect on this - particularly those who encourage centrism and mainstreaming and continue to cite Goodwin or reproduce his thesis in some form.
If you want to defeat the far right, you need a real alternative, not a more moderate version that panders & parrots but offers nothing to address real issues.

Really important article. It won’t be long before Musk, Reform & other far right movements can afford to be less coy about Nazi inspiration. (Remember Farage hissing at Jews?) But the outrage that should induce still won’t be enough to stop them.

Absolutely. Most major papers as well helped him promote his last two books.
Been saying this for years. That & the role of that research in the mainstreaming of the far right he now runs as a candidate for. How are other academics who used it surprised or think he turned at some point?! Says a lot about what they can't or don't want to see.
