We literally have a solution for this, but it's ethnic so we're not allowed to talk about it? Hang the goddamn clothes on your balcony...? 😵

That moment when your first peer reviews come back and one calls your work "sophisticated" and the other "fabulous" 😭😭😭 and this after it took me a week to muster the courage to read it 🙈
In the current situation, not being part of Horizon is an incredibly short-sighted decision. I worked at Horizon briefly, using my Australian experience to design huge funding programs that Australian researchers couldn't access. Being Australian was a huge limitation and it shouldn't have been.
Despite the daft cover image, loved this essay.

Uhmmmm yes except Denmark, at least, has had an integrated nationwide tap-on-tap-off system for at least as long as I've been living here (and a much larger PT network than NZ!)...

The sadness of this story is that NG (and AP) were heroes to my generation, formative influences. It feels like discovering your lunch has been poisoned - what have we absorbed through these stories that we were not aware of? I am sure I am not the only one experiencing a very deep grief.
There are many works of NG's I never warmed to, because they were too cruel for my liking - exceptional violence and the everyday life/plot were too close. I often wondered about NG's childhood in the UK, if it was a generational or cultural thing... I don't like this one possible/alleged answer.
I have never believed in the separation between art & artist - all work has an element of self-expression, art in particular, writing more than most. I know too many artists and writers to think they write from a place other than the place they live from.
The media coverage over the past 48hrs seems to have missed the key allegation - that of NG's conduct in front of his own child. This allegation is incredibly alarming. I am curious whether child services in the US will get involved - shouldn't they?
I am sure everyone will search for their own way to navigate this shitshow. I will put the books away.
Unlike most other such scandals, this one has made me physically sick because of how close it is to childhood - my own, my child's, and how NG allegedly groomed reasonably young fans.
I will be putting away my NG books, for the sole reason that I never ever ever ever ever want to have to tell this story to my child, nor be asked why I kept the books after knowing. Most of his work I never liked, it estheticised cruelty too much, but some books meant a lot to me. No more. Bye bye.
I am back on Bluesky just to add a couple of words on the Neil Gaiman allegations.

When I started researching the global fire sale of affordable housing to vulture funds, I hoped it was a blip, and we would course-correct. Well, last week I gave up. Nothing short of a paradigm shift will save us 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
This is the only good thing to have happened all week.
Gardiner Expressway?
Tonight I'm giving a lecture about financialisation of housing and specific challenges faced by tourism-heavy regions and small towns. These places are usually left out of the discussion because they are far less homogenous than big cities, but their challenges are in some ways more interesting.
