A Jack Snipe among reeds
Always good to start the year with a Jack Snipe (one of 70 species recorded at @tophilllow.bsky.social today)
Iβll see your mine pie and raise you a glass of Sherry
Merry Christmas Phil
Destroy this myth. Please share if you have visited and researched in a library this past year! RT And give a shout out to your favorite library you have ever visited.
Light Knot Grass from the garden trap back in June. Didnβt realise it at the time but itβs the first record for our area. #teammoth #moths
We were advised to keep it frost free I think, our greenhouse is tiny and unheated so we didnβt want to take the risk leaving it out there
Yes ours has flowered since we got it in August - outside till early October, now on a cool windowsill
Tune in at 8pm for tonightβs Folk Along the Coast for the last of the programmes of 2024 before we plunge into two seasonal specials.

Grey and brown Swainson's hawk, puffed up and perching on a utility pole.
While looking for raptors this morning, I came across this adult Swainson's hawk. I asked him why he wasn't in Argentina and he said that Argentina is too cold, bordering on Chile. #birds
Lovely to stumble across this resting Little Auk by Scarborough Harbour earlier today with @grahamscott14.bsky.social. It spent a while sheltering from the northernly winds at mouth of the Harbour, before flying strongly north into a heavy squall. A Great Northern Diver also fed nearby.
It's publication day! My Poyser book on Marsh Tits & Willow Tits is now available.
Huge thanks to publishers @chiffchat.bsky.social who have been fantastic. #NatureWriting #Ornithology #ukbirding #ForestEcology #nature
