'Vicious compliance': Alberta premier decries Edmonton Public Schools' banned book list | CBC News Alberta Premier Danielle Smith slammed the Edmonton Public School Board Friday morning for its banned book list, which features more than 200 titles.

A very narrow minded government set the parameters.
The public school board added all of the books within those parameters and were accused of vicious compliance. A bit of a protest, I’d say.

The TL;DR seems to be, or one interpretation is, they wanted to ban gay sex books in Alberta schools, but they can't say that because that's illegal in Canada, so they banned all sex in books in schools, and then... the Edmonton school board just did exactly what they asked for.
