Labour ‘should lead a wild camping revival’

Excellent piece in the Times today with CEO of Dartmoor National Park calling on the government to change the law so wild camping can take place in other national parks - a call echoed by the unstoppable @campaignerkate.bsky.social of OSS:

Arts centre’s future to be decided by citizens’ panel - Arts Professional An arts centre in Barking has launched an initiative to create a citizens’ panel to inform its plans to reopen. The Galleon Arts Centre closed in 2023 after refurbishment in 2021. However, the buildin...

Imagine Galleon Together will see a citizens' panel setting the direction of an arts venue - the first of its kind in London! I'm chuffed to be working on this with Creative Barking and Dagenham, @citizensinpower.bsky.social @artscouncilengland.bsky.social www.artsprofessional.co.uk/news/newsree...

Galleon Arts Centre: public panel to decide future of London arts venue An assembly of 12 local people will determine the future running of a London arts space, using a model based on systems currently operating in Canada and Australia

This project I’m working on with Creative Barking & Dagenham + @citizensinpower.bsky.social is landing and I’m excited! The first of its kind in London, with a citizens’ panel setting the direction of a cultural venue. Keep an eye out for this 👀

“The phrase “theory of change” has become popular in recent years, as in “what’s your theory of change?” Mine is that categories are leaky and anomalies abound. That change happens in complex, sometimes unpredictable ways, that it often unfolds with slow and indirect consequences, and that what ends up in the centres of power often begins in the margins and shadows. That stories have profound power and changing the story is often the beginning of changing the world.”

Love this from Rebecca Solnit in The Guardian today on how deep social change is non-linear, and takes faith and creative persistence and eyes to see.

I saw this @trplymouth.bsky.social and thought it was great - funny, insightful, vulnerable. Well worth an evening.

Interesting. Having planted a lot of trees but also allowed for natural regeneration by ceasing grazing & hedge cutting, we’re observing that the latter are (unsurprisingly) healthier & growing faster.

I have a list of things I think DCMS should be getting along with that would result in tangible benefits to the sector, instead of trying to micro manage ACE which benefits precisely none of us. If anyone wants it so they can include it in their own response, let me know! #artscouncilengland

All the issues with ACE are the product of LACK - the sector is profoundly struggling. Do not, in your frustration, defenestrate ACE and assume something better is going to come along.

Once you don’t have an arms length body working with the sector, you’re subject to the vagaries (and I mean VAGARIES) of the government of the day. I was at DCMS during the Boris era and be very sure - without ACE, the Kennedy Centre saga is not so unimaginable here.

So glad I stayed up late finishing a response to the Hodge Review 🙄

A thread on my response 👇🏻

As 1/3 American, I’ll take this moment to remind my fellow creatives that whilst no institution is perfect, the fact that @artscouncilengland.bsky.social exists is critical to artists’ independence.

I absolutely did not find it, let me know if you do! I also finally downloaded the white paper. What key words did you go for because other than a slightly better grip on the myriad different types of authorities I came away with… not much.

“Robbing Peter” by Joe Cunningham, 2015. The title comes from a traditional patchwork design with alternating colors, where segments are "robbed" from one block to form the design of another. The #springbudget made me think of this quilt, big blocks of govt. spend squeezing out smaller ones. #quilts
