Genuinely don't know where this romance novel I'm reading is going, which is rather refreshing. I was originally on Team MC's Best Friend With A Crush, but now the two corners of the love triangle are catching obvious feelings for each other and I'm like *cheerleader pompons* po-ly-cule! po-ly-cule!

I've thought a lot about this actually! My theory is it's because of Hunger Games. It worked well in that one because it creates a sense of immediacy and danger. Katniss could die and stop narrating any time. But then publishing just kinda decided "This is the default YA narration style now."

It very much was like coming to accept Santa Claus wasn't real as a kid. I so badly WANTED Santa Claus to be real -- who doesn't want to believe in a cool magic guy that gives you free stuff? -- but ultimately I couldn't square it up logically. And unfortunately it's the same with the afterlife.

But also like not everyone WANTS to be a stay at home parent, some people LIKE their jobs, and the fact that we just default to the fact that it's going to be the woman who gives up her career, but in a leftist fuck capitalism way this time, is annoying.

my mom was a stay at home mom and my dad's career was a bit unstable but he made decent money overall, and my mom still had to take odd jobs to supplement his income at times. My grandmother worked as a nurse pretty much until retirement age.

the one I reread the most as a kid was On the Banks of Plum Creek where the dad very explicitly sucks at farming and they all almost starve to death because the dad sucks at farming so I think it's kind of funny that the trad crowd read those books and thought "That's awesome I want to do that"

I'm not convinced gen z guys are actually more misogynistic than when millennial guys were young but it's different. Sexist Millennial guys saw rejection as a challenge and sexual harassment as a battle to be won. Sexist gen Z guys seem to resent that they must do anything to win a partner at all.
