Our golden, Sarge, lost his pekingese companion and went into deep depression. He was raised from a pup by two pekingese. We rescued an older pekingese and they fell in love with each other. Sarge passed away two years later at 14 1/2 so now our pekingese is alone but coping well.
In Canada if there's sun... we BBQ! AND go sunbathing. It's fine.
