VA-11 HALL-A meant a lot to me so that's where "HAZE" came from and the other one is a dark joke about a serious opioid addiction
also this makes my name ungooglable as all you get is like weed strains and flowers

Kings appointed saltpeter agents who could seize nitrified earth from manure pills and under chicken coops.
This upset a lot of people because they didnโt have to ask permission nor give compensation so this was a violation of etiquette for national securityโs sake

The weird part to me is Dim Sum is a genre of small plates of food and in Australian itโs just one type of fried dumpling

They respond we must be incredibly cultured in the future

A bowl of dimmies, a large deep fried wonton dumpling stuffed with a meat and vegetable filling.
just learned about an iconic Australian snack food, "dimmies", an Australianism for "dim sum". A Chinese-Australian chef made a version of shumai dumpling with a wonton wrapper stuffed with pork or beef with veg and then deep fried.

Saw someone link to a piece of open source, self hosted porno organizing software and itโs beautiful โ a clean interface, fantastic metadata handling, an incredible wiki and KB. I have absolutely no use for it but Iโm just stunned by the attention to detail that only a pervert could achieve here.

If you have magic in your fantasy and you still donโt like gunpowder. You can make it obsolete. Lewis and Clark carried a pneumatic gun with them, back then an Austrian air gun with a foot pump could fire a lead bullet as hard as gunpowder could and required less logistics. Only lead for shot.

And I should mention, French cavalry still wore their heavy steel, bullet resistant breastplates in the early days of WWI. They could stop a bullet at extreme range but the rapid fire magazine bolt action rifle, machine guns, and small artillery guns cut their horses out from under them.

Firearms were still used in initial skirmishes and could cut apart armies so they couldn't do a bayonet charge, but it was the bayonet that won the battle at the end for an exceeding long time even after firearms became key.
So you can still have your fun sword fantasy even with firearms.

2 schools of thought developed, Feuertaktik, firepower tactics, maximizing weight of lead on target; and Shocktaktik, bringing maximum weight of a bayonet charge on target.
And until the US Civil War and WWI, Shocktaktik was actually the thing that won battles in terms of who was standing on land

One thing noticed in gunpowder warfare is that any army will break once like a line of swords, pikes, start charging at them.
It was far less likely for an army to break even if they were being cut to pieces with firearms. And battle is all about holding a spot of land.

a lot of cold weapons, swords, arrows, spears, took a lifetime to master. Pike formations became exceeding common as long stick to poke en masse was easy to do.
Gunpowder weapons for the same amount of practice deliver immense effect on target. I forgot where I read it, but...

Economy is also a big factor, like the Soviet PPS-43 submachine gun's body is made out of heavy-gauge but low quality stamped steel because it's easily worked with then available Soviet presses and dies and was abundant in their supply chain. It's thick to compensate for the lower quality of steel.

Random reminder to writers for speculative fiction:
Steel is not one material with the same properties everywhere at all times, it is a family of materials we have been continuously improving on since inventing them
Steel in the past was worse, and future steel will be better
