I remember stories of recruiters going to Portland and Seattle looking for the next Grunge breakout band. I've known of rock musicians who were dropped or asked to change their sound. And as radio deregulated in the 90s, well @artofcoop.bsky.social can tell you how much LA radio sucked more than I.

Honestly, I blame grunge. Not the music itself, but the way executives embraced it. Metal could be dark, yet rock had an upbeat energy. Grunge on rock stations started with some great stuff like Smells Like Teen Spirit & just emotionally went downhill. No wonder rap like Snoop & Dre skyrocketed.
