I suspect I shared this one before. Chapter 1 of the fantasy, Helena wants a vantage on the chapel gargoyles that intrigue her.
By the middle of the novel, she has fallen head over heels in love with one of them.

Rider's not most people.
Tbh, nor am I.
Of course, you aren't either. No one is, but my point is some of us can get into states where fear of our death, & even suffering, doesn't fully exist.
I don't really know what it comes from. I've always be strange.
He doesn't see himself as poor, not for that at least. If anything, the dream gave him confidence in himself.
It's Song who has this part worse.💔
I imagine most people would in the places he's put in.
This is one place I have to deal with loads more than he does.
Darn, I want to spare him, but I don't know how much I can.😭
- he may face, bond, beaten, & burned alive.
In Named By Love, Song has a mirror of that dream, where he sees Rider in that place. It may be more than a dream.😭

Rider knows the world too closely for there to be much room for imaginations. Yes, I mean that, literally.
That said, he does have 2 very vivid dreams in Bound By Heart, the first being very spiritual.

There are also some rather funny & harmless pictures his mind forms when he's a small child, so that most really is only a most.
- know what choice he'd make, & could never live with either.
Still, most of the time his imagination isn't super specific. That is only a *most*. 1 of the scenes I find most tragic involves a very specific picture his mind creates (I'm still considering cutting the image - 2/3

I was going to say Lawcket's being very practical makes him not very imaginative, but was hesitate because I know he imagines his fears to an extent, & then I remembered that snippet I've shared once or twice where he imagines himself in a position he knows he could never- 1/3

Why this world is filled with suffering
The fiercest love can't keep away
That bright spot blurs to streaks
Shining on the moisture in my eyes
Young or old
Joyful or grieving
The same stars gaze down on us

Rider's never heard of a mule, but it's no secret he can & *will* be as stubborn as he chooses to be. He doesn't even try to hide it to avoid suffering.
But he will also play the submissive servant when that furthers his goals.
Yeah. At least he has people who make him let them take care of him.
All I can offer, is I read your whole thread, & I sympathize deeply. & yet still I have no answers. I get up each morning for much the same reasons, & often I don't want to. But I do, because if I didn't I wouldn't be loving the creatures who need me.

You have good reason to, but he also would never have succeeded without his unshakable determination.
He can do one thing few can, try even when he knows he can't succeed.
I guess it's less confidence, & more conviction mixed with sheer stubbornness.
- He tends to be a bit too stubborn about overworking himself, especially when he's upset.
Same with ignoring his needs.
& when he's a prisoner, he literally doesn't say a word about his family, not even his name.

I think for Lawcket, it depends on what he's trying to do.
He's a touch "too good" at being stubborn, & if it's something he really cares about, he will not back down.
However, if he feels he's hurting others his resolve is much more faltering.

All of that said, he is very capable of stepping back & using reason, when it's an option. & he's not overly stubborn about smaller goals. He doesn't give up too quickly, but if being stubborn is completely unfruitful he's willing to wait, to step back & do it the right way.

When Rider has goals, he will pursue them to his last breath.
He often appears suicidal to others, even to the reader, not just because he's willing to give his life, but because he WILL NOT live without trying to serve what he's given his heart to, even if failure- 1/2
I like how you put this. Learning not to see everything as conflict, like with nature, can be very, very important to living.
