Each day, I try to find one thing that fights off despair. Today, we had frozen Thin Mints while I told my niece back in my day, they cost $2.50 and I walked the neighborhood for an hour every day after school with my red wagon. She rolled her eyes so hard I remembered what joy feels like.

Grammarly Is Facing a Class Action Lawsuit Over Its AI ‘Expert Review’ Feature The feature, which Grammarly shut down Wednesday, presented editing suggestions as if they came from established authors and academics—without their consent.

I'm suing Grammarly over its paid AI feature that presented editing suggestions as if they came from me - and many other writers and journalists - without consent.

State law requires consent before someone's name can be used for commercial purposes.

those in Cambridge: I'm giving a talk on Wednesday to the Cambridge Bibliophiles on 'Obliterated Provenances in Early Modern Books' (Peterhouse, 8:45) ... and a talk on Thursday to the Material Texts Seminar on 'Halliwell-Phillipps, theft, and the problem of identifying manuscripts' (5pm)

I am middle management at a university and somehow I have zero meetings today. I'm not sure how this is possible, given that meetings are my job. I might... read something? Write??

NEH's budget is tiny—not just compared to NSF/NIH, but compared to humanities funding in every other wealthy nation. What little was there was largely rescinded and several programs were cut in full last year. It decimated not merely individual projects but whole corners of the humanities in the US.

It is $3 beer night at the boy aquarium and the fish are fighting. At one point a crowd member goaded a guy in the penalty box for fighting so much he got tossed for misconduct. Someone else spit blood after a punch to the face. There has been 6 more fights since then. No one has kissed.

As we all know, the more articles you have about Milton, the better prepared you are to *checks notes* schedule classes and manage grad school admission paperwork.

I have personally experienced:
- Rahm Emanuel as mayor
- Cruz and Cornyn as senators and Abbot as governor
- Gavin Newsome as governor
- Moreno and Husted as senators

I might be cursed 🤔

I got a shag haircut and asked it to be cleaned up because I looked like a budget Shane from the L Word. My stylist had no idea what I was talking about, so she (un?)fortunately got a whole history lesson on our cultural fixation with Kate Moennig.

I have a similar deck, but it is "I heard you are concerned about LLMs so let me help you be more specific about those concerns"

*side point is that Clarence Hervey also believes fiction is reality, specifically that Rousseau's form of education wasn't nonsense. Women get this critique the most, but it cuts both ways with Edgeworth.

It is all story, all message, all simulacra.

In Lennox's Female Quixote, logic is what pulls Arabella out of her fictional mindset into reality. Will logic work when every message can "look" accurate? When the fiction has little opposition? I'm so curious to find out.

There is a point (reached a while ago but now cheaper and faster) where we cannot tell an image captured from reality with one generated from tokens and references. And all of a sudden, Victoria's confusion that men do not behave like her novels is blended to no divide between "fiction" and "man."

I know a pre-social media and mass surveillance world. My foundation of "real" and "not real" is fundamentally different than a 22 year old now and light years from a 12 year old who I meet in a decade whose experience with genAI will be unavoidable in media and increasingly education.

We see seismic shifts in the classroom dynamic from online learning. Socialization and focus are simply different.

What will happen in a few years to students who have been consuming AI images and content as "real", and their professors who have done the same without knowing? Sought out or not?

In Edgeworth's Belinda, Victoria believes heroes in chivalric stories are real to the point human actions are illegible to her. This is played as naivety due to her isolation.* My students often found the scenario hard to access.

In the deep fake era, I wonder how quickly that is going to change.

The fun thing about having generalized anxiety is I can do normal scary like heights no problem but normal things like making a phone call or getting a vague email make me panic.

We are training undergrads (18-22) to digitize vcr tapes, cassettes, and vinyl. We introduce phrases like "rewind" into their vocab and made diagrams of what a tape looks like from 6 angles. And we get questions like "how do I rewind a record" which is understandable but turns my bones to dust.
