I wrote about my childhood friend Alexi Pretti. Please read it and share it and remember him as a human being. @theverge.com

Who would have guessed the thing that would worry me most about starting a new graduate degree at age 40 is switching from the MLA style guide to the APA style guide.
In addition, as an extra added bonus, reading is a joy.
In an era where many forms of media are intended to be easily absorbed and digested, taking time to read can be used as an act of defiance, requiring attention and nuance.
Humans have an innate need for stories, and some of our most basic (think fairy tales like Red Riding Hood) can be traced back thousands of years and are present in a broad spectrum of cultures and civilizations.
I mean, fiction is a field of academic study, and every academic library should support it as such. It informs other fields by offering glimpses into how people in different times and places viewed and interacted with the world in which they lived.
Fiction allows us to engage with others through time and space in a way nothing else can. It places us in shoes we would never otherwise have the opportunity to walk in. It increases our empathy, and deepens our understanding of ourselves, those with whom we exist, and those who came before.

Poem from last month
I love this, on the dream of the multilingual city.
This is why I got a booster. At some point one of these Texas yahoos are going to wander to New Orleans for a hot infection weekend.
I initially read that as "baby book" and was immediately jealous that babies got such a pretty cover.
I called Cassidy and Kennedy this morning at their Metairie offices and left voicemails at each regarding RFK Jr's nomination. I don't know if other offices are answering, but cal anyway.
I'm adopting a new motto for the foreseeable future: dream small. Affect what I can in the way I can, without burning myself out. Not every fight has to be big, and winning smaller ones can make the big one easier.
Hope is the thing with lawyers
I ended up getting dressed I 43 layers to walk her, and she didnβt want to come back inside. My darling, neither of us is built for this weather.
What are small things you do to help build community in your immediate area?
I garden and will put extra seedlings or produce or little bouquets out for neighbors to take. I started doing it to keep food from going to waste, but neighbors stop and talk to me when I'm gardening now.
Le Ponce has some good tea service. Small Selection, but I believe there are several herbals.
Pointing out there are parts of the city that tourists don't visit doesn't invalidate the point. Both things are true at the same time. Just like for every other city that would classify as a tourist destination.
I'm not sure what this passive-aggressive attempt at eliciting an argument is supposed to achieve. Cities are comprised of neighborhoods. That is, in fact, how cities work. None of this changes the truth of the my original statement that New Orleans (not solely the FQ) is a tourist destination.
The constancy of the violence is numbing, almost to the point of dehumanization. Maintaining caring and compassion begins to require constant work.
Of course there's more, but this is a microblogging thread, not an exhaustive examination.
Thanks for the note (not remotely MAGA though)! Have the day you deserve π€
