Pinned lizzie johnson @lizziejohnsonnn · Aug 19, 2021 Almost three years ago, my editor called me early one November morning. A wildfire had sparked near a town called Paradise, he said. Could I go? (1/13) 0:02 / 0:10 lizzie johnson @lizziejohnsonnn · 47m I was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a warzone. I have no words. I'm devastated. Quote lizzie johnson @lizziejohnsonnn · Jan 25 Waking up without power, heat, or running water. (Again.) But the work here in Kyiv continues. Warming up in the car, writing in pencil — pen ink freezes — by headlamp.
A publisher who lays off a reporter whose pen is freezing because she's covering a frigid war zone while dodging missiles is not an editor you want to work for, in a more perfect world
I have lots of fond memories of The Washington Post. I read it as a high schooler in VA, and I visited their offices as a vendor making typefaces for it. Lots of good people work(ed) there. Support them if you can, please: gofund.me/4c9ae0d55
(around the No Kings logo, images of megaphones, and a photo of protesters holding signs that read “ICE OUT”) MARCH 28 NO KINGS NO THRONES. NO CROWNS.
The date for the next No Kings Day is set.
But this is a save the date, not a “sit back and wait.” 🧵
Our calls and emails are critical but it's also very important that we turn up the pressure on senators in public in their home states before the vote on DHS funding. We encourage you to plan creative, nonviolent, and lawful actions that honor the lives taken and highlight our demand to rein in ICE.

Dr. King’s legacy in Boston and across the United States keeps us marching towards justice, liberation, and a more equitable future. Today, we honor his legacy and commit ourselves to Dr. King’s dream.
We honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by committing ourselves to the noble struggle for equal rights. Dr. King’s work and words are still as poignant and necessary today as they were during his life.
Since we had the day off, Natalia insisted we sing happy birthday to MLK Jr. Happy birthday, dear Martin!
Yes. Listen to the very end.

A very fabulous man told me, "you got some hair, girl." I'm pretty sure it was a compliment, but it might have been an insult. Either way, it was the highlight of the morning.
In 2021, Maia Kobabe’s graphic memoir #GenderQueer was named the most challenged book in the #US. For #BannedBooksWeekUK, Maia reminds us how important it is for libraries to stock books that open up the wider world. Why not visit a library this week? www.indexoncensorship.org/bannedbooksw...

(above an image of Capitol Hill) We're in a government shutdown because Republicans demand a budget that kicks millions off their healthcare and jacks up prices for the rest of us. And the GOP is willing to hold government funding hostage until Trump gets his way.
Republicans have shut down the government to take healthcare away from millions of Americans and give Trump a blank check for his illegal power grab.

I did a double-take. Yes, *exactly* like her. I was so surprised, I started to cry. I’m sure she was a real person, not actually a ghost. And that their likenesses a coincidence, and there was no metaphysical significance to this encounter. But wow. Emotions are wild.
While visiting Windsor Castle, I saw a ghost. A woman in a painter’s apron appeared during one of the brief rain showers, holding some papers she didn’t want to get wet. I moved out of her way as she ran past, and I realized she looked exactly my friend (a painter) who died a couple of years ago.
I need to tell the internet that I’m getting my car state inspection ON TIME for the first time in a few million years
