Behind Enemy Lines: My Deep Dive Into the Grammar Gene Debate A Personal Perspective: Facing the interplay between genetic factors and linguistic development prompted a question: Should I trust my instincts or those of others?

Today on International Women's Day I share a post that I wrote about Elizabeth Bates, my doctoral advisor. She was truly inspiring, as an advisor and as a model of what mentorship and guidance really means. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-...

The Brain Beneath the Label The same brain systems that shape how we learn language may also influence vulnerability to psychosis.

Many years ago, we published work linking dopamine to bilingualism. Yesterday's post from @MichaelHalassa finally gave me the clarity to understand it.

The Cost of Building Outside the System On networks, exile, and the thirty-year proof

In the tariff case, it could be said there is also a potential, for example, ability to sue (act), that the environment supports or suppresses. In the case of social environments, however there strong feedback loops between actor and environment, these are weaker in the moth case (seemingly).

I find this interesting, but the link between mechanisms is not so clear. In the case of the moths, the implication is that moths of light and dark are always born, but the environment defines survival. Generically, each color represents an information potential with varying dynamic potential.

I’ve been thinking about the connections too. Your comment is making me think more. Maybe it’s the change across dynamic states. Still thinking…

The Multilingual Myth A recent study suggests that people in multilingual countries age more gracefully. But this may have more to do with wealth, healthcare, and structural advantage than language.

Struggling to make ends meet, UH grad students call on university to cover healthcare premiums Peer institutions like the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University subsidize health coverage for their teaching and research assistants who are U.S. citizens.

Huge investments in infrastructure but not in the human kind. Grad students are noticing. www.yahoo.com/news/article...

Is AI Killing Jobs? Or Are We Letting the Wrong Story Take Over? On Monday, Education Innovation and Technology at the University of Houston hosted a one-day conference on the Future of Work with AI.

Is AI really killing jobs?

Unemployment risk for AI-exposed workers rose before ChatGPT — tracking 2022 rate hikes and post-COVID corrections.

Fundamentals still matter.

Before COVID I gave gender ally training to men as part of an ADVANCE grant. I think that type of training would be helpful if given more broadly.

He assigned reading, then had them write in class. No take-home writing.
He's right kids read less. But 7 hrs school + 5 hrs homework nightly? I'd avoid extra work in high school too.
We ask them to memorize. They do until they don't.

More on this next week.

What infants see first shapes what comes next.
Faces built the brain. Screens are changing the input.

What Lived Experience Gives You That Data Cannot Last week I wrote about my great-grandfather Wilhelm, who carried language and tradition across an ocean, adapting to a new world while changing it in return.

We’re surrounded by data, models, and predictions — and yet some forms of understanding still refuse to be captured.

I wrote about why that distinction matters right now, particularly as AI becomes a dominant way of “knowing”:
