trade out "fairness" with "equity" and suddenly you're having to take actual material conditions into account; income, education, housing, crime, you have to cite studies and do math and, worst of all, have a coherent ideology. much easier to be "fair," whatever the hell that means.
i just think it's interesting that "fairness" as an institutional value only matters when the people we need to be fair to are a loud, bigoted minority of rich con artists and their impoverished thralls. they like "fairness" because it's impossible to define and inherently emotional.
"i don't agree with [x] but i believe in free speech and fair coverage" is just another way of saying "i agree with [x] but prefer to maintain plausible deniability." fairness itself always seems to drift ever rightward, growing in importance only when conservative views are on their way out.
fun fact: this has been true of every modern conservative hate movement in the usa from the tea party to gamergate to the alt-right and beyond. they only left the impression they did because a bipartisan bourgeois groupchat elevated them to create the illusion of consensus for their unpopular views
