A missing girl. A harvest festival. A village that knows exactly where she is. Lord of Misrule (2023) is #folkhorror rooted in English rural tradition. The community's silence is the most frightening thing in it.

1972. A bedridden girl draws a house, a ring of ancient stonesโฆ and walks into the picture. Escape into Night predates Children of the Stones by 5 years & is just as unsettling.

Folk horror continues to thrive on cinema screens around the world, and this March the genre takes centre stage once again in Derby as the Darkness in the Fields Film Festival returns for its third edition. lovehorror.co.uk/horror-news/... #movies

It was a shopping list of cool ideas without a cohesive story pulling it all together. The characters, settings and the threat all felt underwritten. Like a producer ran away with Peele's outline before he'd had a chance to finish it

The Loathsome Lambton Worm | Full-Cast Audio Drama | The Wicker Man Sequel
YouTube video by The Loathsome Lambton Worm
Anthony Shaffer outlined a sequel to The Wicker Man. Russian corn spirits, a medieval dragon, Sgt Howie plummeting off a cliff tied to eagles. Nobody made it.. until 2020 when an audio adaptation was released๐ฎ๐ฅ๐

My mother was commenting the other day about how lovely the people in her sister's care home are. For 6.5 grand a month, I'd expect them to be positively servile

Britannia was such a dark, weird, completely addictive series. Jez Butterworth really leaned into the mythic chaos of Roman Britain and it paid off. Still one of the most distinctive shows of the last few years โ๏ธ๐ฅ

Everyone remembers Children of the Stones in 1972 childrenโs television unleashed a tale just as uncanny: moving standing stones. In Escape into Night, a bedridden girl sketches a lonely house & a ring of ancient stones then steps inside her own drawing.ย

The book lays it all out a little more clearly. I'll admit it was too much for my young TV brain at the time

Few things have haunted a generation like Children of the Stones (1977). A village trapped in time, standing stones humming with menace & a cast of glassy-eyed villagers. Absolutely unhinged teatime telly

Matthew Hopkins rode through East Anglia in 1645 leaving bodies behind him. Michael Reeves' Witchfinder General (1968) never lets you forget he was real. Vincent Price at his most quietly monstrous.

That's a great list. Some proper obscure folk horrors in there. I do think, though, that The Devil's Bath should come with a warning. Its horror is based in such real human tragedy. A heartbreaking film

Ben Wickey's "More Weight" is a shocking tale of the Salem witch trials. Told through the lens of Giles Coreyโs defiant silence, it's a sobering study of hysteria, power, and refusal

Every black dog omen, standing stone, pagan dance and village ritual leads back to this. Reader's Digest's Folklore, Myths & Legends of Britain (1973) is the keystone of British folklore and folk horror.

A vet investigates livestock plague in an isolated village. The locals blame a lonely old woman. Nigel Kneale's Murrain (1975) asks the question: when belief takes hold, does evidence matter at all?

Every day the same ritual. Every day something shifts. Enys Men (2022) is shot on 16mm, soaked in #Cornwall & utterly resistant to easy explanation. The kind of film that gets under your skin and stays.
