And the leprechaun says “yeahhhhhhh”
Oh no! I hope they caught the guy.
I’ve been to TPC Sawgrass. Quite accessible to the general public, allowing even riff-raff like myself to eat at the clubhouse. (You should have seen me! I was like an excited little kid.)
I remember getting a letter during the summer before my freshman year at the Honors College. Luckily, she was cool. :)
Corona-versery, as others have noted.
I prefer a happier memory of this date.
In 1994, I boarded a plane for the first time in my life to travel to Trier, Germany. My life would never be the same in so many ways.
I can’t stop watching this clip.
Is this some sort of trend? Did the guy lose a bet? Play Ja Ja Ding Dong?
For what it’s worth, my career (first-year English) ended up requiring me to teach a lot of literature, which I learned to love. I was just so much more interested in linguistics.
I had a double undergrad major in German and French, but I didn’t want to get a grad degree in either because I was not interested in literature. I learned about linguistics my junior year, and my mind was blown. Took intro to linguistics my senior year, and my mind was made up.
Tweet snarking on AI/Claude.
😂🤣😂🤣
One New Year’s Eve, an overwhelmed manager locked herself in the liquor/wine/beer storage area to cry. (The tales about walk-in refrigerators being the place to cry and scream? Been there, done that, many times.) But the booze closet on New Year’s Eve? I felt bad for her, but I needed vodka.
Tell my husband that! Ha ha ha.
He hates garlic, so no garlic bread, no garlic pasta sauce, etc. 🧄
Sad postscript;
The F&B manager died years ago. So did the Clarion manager. So did the bartender she slapped.
That bartender cursed me out when he was fired. I still remember folding pizza boxes—contract with Pizza Hut—and he screamed all sort of insults and obscenities my way.

Super happy to see our paper (w/ @riannawalcott.bsky.social) in Journal of Sociolinguistics: "‘Gen Z Language? Y'all Mean AAVE’: The Appropriation of African American Vernacular English as ‘TikTok Language’ 🧵

lol, the second time in a few days, I cited the Glenn Howerton line in BlackBerry.
Me wearing a “Never Enough Garlic” shirt.
I dedicate this t-shirt to my garlic-hating husband. Maybe he’s a vampire, from Waterloo where the vampires hang out?
Also, one of my favorite F&B managers ever at Embassy Suites used to scream at me. I’ve told stories about him, and the consensus has been, “Why didn’t you quit?” Again, bills to pay, and he seriously was one of my favorite bosses.
Some ask “Why put up with that behavior?”
One night, at Embassy Suites, an assistant manager slapped a bartender during an argument. She was fired immediately, but when I found out a couple of years later she was managing at The Clarion, I put in an application right away. Why? Bills to pay.
I know Redzepi appeared on The Bear, but I can’t help but wonder if the Joel McHale character was based on chefs like him. The tweezer story!
THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!
Infographic titled "AI Isn't a Ticket To an A," explaining how chatbots work, what the data show about the prevalence of these technologies and how they're used, what we know about the quality of their output, and what we know about the impact that frequent use of these technologies has on their users and on content creators, low-wage workers, and the environment.
For their first project, my Kids and Society students have to create an infographic clarifying a common misconception about "kids these days." I'd prefer that they not use AI to create their projects, so I made my own infographic explaining why : )
No, it made sense!
I was also rooting for the Japanese player, as well as Mr. Wonderful’s ping-pong paddle. Safdie has gotten a lot of grief for casting O’Leary, who was okay but essentially playing himself.
And I’m a sucker for underdog sports narratives. (Really, that’s the crux of my beloved Queen’s Gambit.)
But even that angle fell really flat.
Funny, I kept thinking about the line in BlackBerry, “I'm from Waterloo, where the vampires hang out!” and how much better it worked there. The casting of Mr. Wonderful didn’t work.
Oscars ranking: Sinners One Battle After Another The Secret Agent Sentimental Value Train Dreams Bugonia Frankenstein F1 Hamnet Marty Supreme
Marty Supreme was terrible. Hamnet, too, sadly.
Jessie Buckley doesn’t like cats, Timmy scoffed at ballet and opera. What other recent Oscar drama have I missed?
From an Arkells IG story. My worlds are colliding!
A masterpiece of writing, directing, acting. No other show has made me think about my past, my family and my F&B days, like The Bear.
And Seasons 3 & 4 are slept on.

I miss those early days of the interwebs. Sigh.
