Another iOS update is out already - it’s an important one
reminder to update your devices because not doing so just makes you vulnerable to the threats you're trying to avoid
If the update is ready, an "Update Now" button should appear. Once you click it, you'll have to enter your phone's passcode.
You'll then have to wait up to about 30 minutes for the update to download and prepare for install. During this time, you can use your phone, BUT when the update is finally ready, your phone will restart immediately on its own even if you're in the middle of something, and be offline for 10-15 minutes.

We know it's especially difficult as activists and impacted folks to go offline for 10-15 minutes during the day, so try to think of or plan a moment in the day, maybe even another day in the week, when you're not expected to respond to texts or calls. It can help to have iMessage, Signal, or WhatsApp installed on your computer so you can continue communicating while your phone is down.
For the update, you'll need to make sure your phone is charged and connected to Wifi, to avoid mobile data charges. Plan for the update to take up to about 30 minutes to download (during which time you can still use it), and then for the phone to be offline for 10-15 more minutes for installation.
Once you're ready, open your Settings app, select "General", then select "Software Update", and wait for the spinning wheel to stop.

The Israeli government funds NSO, a $243 million company which develops weaponized cyberattacks for the Israeli government and has a history of hacking the devices of activists and journalists. This includes an attack discovered by Citizen Lab in Sep 2023 which had allowed Israeli to take full control of any Apple device in the world connected to the internet.
When a hack like this is discovered, the situation gets even worse before it gets better. Software updates to defend against the hack may be released by the manufacturer ASAP, BUT it takes time for those updates to reach your device. Meanwhile, as soon as the update is released, the update file itself can be inspected by even less sophisticated hackers to then start using that same hack against you.
This means one simple way to avoid being hacked by Is or its sympathizers is to update your phone as soon as an update is available. Sadly, Apple's "automatic" update process is slow and disables your phone for 10-15 minutes. It also doesn't actually happen automatically like it's supposed to.
