We were honoured to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to Jewry Wall during his visit to Leicester yesterday.

The Duke explored our fully immersive museum – where 21st century technology brings to life one of the largest surviving Roman structures in Britain.

September from the Latin septem "seven", originally the 7th month in the 10 month Roman calendar of Romulus but by 713 BC Numa Pompilius added January & February to the end of the year, by 45 AD January started the year, September became the ninth month but retained its name.

Strabo’s Geographica, an encyclopaedia of geographical knowledge says Britain paid more in customs and duties than could be raised from taxation if the island were conquered. Strabo 64 BC - 24 AD was an educated citizen of the Roman Empire of Greek descent.

"Have I played the part well? Then applaud as I exit" Emperor Augustus’ last words, who died #OnThisDay in 14 AD. The first true Emperor of Rome, he doubled its size over 40 years, establishing a regime that would endure until the fall of Constantinople in the 15th Century.

Augustus planned to invade Britain in 34, 27, & 25 BC but never carried them out. Julius Caesar had previously attempted to invade in 55 & 54 BC, but these had also failed. The actual Roman conquest of Britain began in 43 AD under Emperor Claudius, born 1st August in 10 BC

Explore Roman Leicester with the Jewry Wall Museum App. www.jewrywall.com/visit/jewry-...

Enjoy beautiful mosaic puzzles and our Merrels game, a classic Roman strategy for 1 or 2 players, but the augmented reality option geo-located on site really brings the Roman bathhouse ruins to life.

Went to the @jewrywallroman.bsky.social museum in Ratae Corieltauvorum (aka Leicester) yesterday. Fascinating and accessible introduction to life here in Roman times. Flooring was more complicated in those days: this mosaic, one of the finest in Britain, originally had an estimated 400,000 pieces.

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus had planned multiple invasions of Britain, in 34, 27 and 25 BC. They were called off due to revolts elsewhere in the Roman Empire and/or because the Britons seemed ready to come to terms, settling instead into a relationship of diplomacy and trade.

In August 55 BC, Roman General, Emperor Julius Caesar invaded Britain with two legions of men, aiming to deter British support for Gallic tribes fighting against Roman rule, the campaign was short-lived due to storms damaging ships, causing Caesar to withdraw back to Gaul.
