The plane’s air-conditioning was making him cold and the muscles in his neck felt tight. He was going back to the place that had made him feel like a sack of trash. Was this a mistake? He remembered the title of another REM song, “Don’t Go Back to Rockville,” which sounded like a warning. Looking up the airplane’s aisle at the flight attendant bringing around the food cart, he remembered taking Marcus and J’nia to dim sum for the first time. He had brought cultural value to New York. And now maybe he could bring cultural value back to the islands.

“What if that woman decided to name her bakery something else? Not Harriet?” I asked. “How will you find her? “Oh, I s’pose I’ll just ask around. Someone in Tacoma’s got to know where to get some good hot cross buns. And if I don’t find her, that’s all right. I’ll figure something out. I always do,” she said, her face beaming with optimism and good cheer. “Let me tell you something, my friend. The secret to America is to leap before you look and then figure it when you get there. Because if you look long enough, you’re sho to find some reason why you shouldn’t go.”

Americans with Asian faces are sometimes complimented: "You speak English very well!" like they just got off the boat.

My first immigrant ancestor came to Hawaii in 1895, the same year US business interests deposed the Queen of the Hawaii and annexed the kingdom, 131 years ago.

Imagine an America where an Asian-American child can think of the American frontier and picture themselves there, a world where they are not eternally considered a recent immigrant. #FrankMatsura could do that.

“We can share an apartment while we each do our thing. You’d study with Dr. Christensen and the other faculty there, and I’ll go out and try to get hired at a newspaper.” He held up a flattened palm like a stop sign. “I wouldn’t be dependent on you. I have some money saved.” “Do you think I care about money?” she asked. He set the catalog down. “I just wanted to make clear that I wouldn’t take advantage of you. I’d pay my way.” She began to cry. “You don’t care about me studying at Columbia. You just want to go pursue your goddamned New York Times fantasy and not have to dump me.” Fantasy echoed in his head. Dump echoed too.

I liked Before the Coffee Gets Cold but LOVED Kindred.

I'm sorry you had to endure that. Bad teachers don't just fail to teach their subject matter. They teach kids to hate the subject and make them feel stupid -- and anyone who does that to already-vulnerable kids should be flogged.

I know it's an alternate reality, but as a retired teacher, I'm kind of pissed off at this math teacher. That's not just unfair, but demoralizing.
