The New York chapter of his life had lasted four years, and now he was going back. Sitting in the aisle seat, a faint siren of dread whined in the back of his mind. The planeโ€™s air-conditioning was making him cold and the muscles in his neck felt tight. He was going back to the place that had made him feel like a sack of trash. Was this a mistake? He remembered the title of another REM song, โ€œDonโ€™t Go Back to Rockville,โ€ which sounded like a warning.
Looking up the airplaneโ€™s aisle at the flight attendant bringing around the food cart, he remembered taking Marcus and Jโ€™nia to dim sum for the first time. He had brought cultural value to New York. And now maybe he could bring cultural value back to the islands.

Does one give TW for sex discrimination in advancement? It's certainly a trauma for Evie, the liveliest character in my WIP. #WIPsnips #screw #writesky #literaryfiction

So, so many. But Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler has to be in the top three.

Less Than Zero is 2d person POV. I don't like it. I keep resisting, thinking, "No, I didn't do that. That's not my girlfriend. Don't tell me I said that."

He got up from the sidewalk and patted himself. He wasnโ€™t hurt. Theyโ€™d taken his wallet, but not his keys or watchโ€”not that his Swatch was worth anything.
A white-bearded man in a soiled jacket, baggy pants, and a tired look on his face came up to him. โ€œYou okay?โ€ The man smelled like he hadnโ€™t bathed.
Brushing himself off, Luke mumbled automatically, yeah, thanks.

โ€œWhat if that woman decided to name her bakery something else? Not Harriet?โ€ I asked. โ€œHow will you find her?
โ€œOh, I sโ€™pose Iโ€™ll just ask around. Someone in Tacomaโ€™s got to know where to get some good hot cross buns. And if I donโ€™t find her, thatโ€™s all right. Iโ€™ll figure something out. I always do,โ€ she said, her face beaming with optimism and good cheer. โ€œLet me tell you something, my friend. The secret to America is to leap before you look and then figure it when you get there. Because if you look long enough, youโ€™re sho to find some reason why you shouldnโ€™t go.โ€

Almost nothing is known about Frank's two years in Seattle, which gave me license to invent a story. Rejected as a photographer, he worked as a hotel dishwasher earning subsistence wages. His friendship with a kind Japanese farmer sustained his spirit. #FrankMatsura #amquerying #literaryfiction

The Central Park jogger, 1989. A longer passage would be inappropriately gruesome for this game. "She had lost more than half of the blood in her body, suffered from massive internal bleeding, and was in a coma." #WIPsnips #massive #writesky #literaryfiction

Americans with Asian faces are sometimes complimented: "You speak English very well!" like they just got off the boat.

My first immigrant ancestor came to Hawaii in 1895, the same year US business interests deposed the Queen of the Hawaii and annexed the kingdom, 131 years ago.

Imagine an America where an Asian-American child can think of the American frontier and picture themselves there, a world where they are not eternally considered a recent immigrant. #FrankMatsura could do that.

โ€œWe can share an apartment while we each do our thing. Youโ€™d study with Dr. Christensen and the other faculty there, and Iโ€™ll go out and try to get hired at a newspaper.โ€ He held up a flattened palm like a stop sign. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be dependent on you. I have some money saved.โ€
โ€œDo you think I care about money?โ€ she asked.
He set the catalog down. โ€œI just wanted to make clear that I wouldnโ€™t take advantage of you. Iโ€™d pay my way.โ€
She began to cry. โ€œYou donโ€™t care about me studying at Columbia. You just want to go pursue your goddamned New York Times fantasy and not have to dump me.โ€
	Fantasy echoed in his head.
	Dump echoed too.

I'm sorry you had to endure that. Bad teachers don't just fail to teach their subject matter. They teach kids to hate the subject and make them feel stupid -- and anyone who does that to already-vulnerable kids should be flogged.

I know it's an alternate reality, but as a retired teacher, I'm kind of pissed off at this math teacher. That's not just unfair, but demoralizing.
