During World War 1, he was a first lieutenant of Coast Artillery being promoted in rank to captain. He remained in the army reserves until World War II, which seen him recalled to active duty, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring with an honorable discharge in October 1944.

#laurelandhardy's third sound film Men O'War (1929) was filmed in Hollenbeck Park, LA. This caused a lot of trouble while filming, crowds would gather and laugh at the action thus spoiling the sound. It got so bad one day it resulted in filming being abandoned!

The Finishing Touch (1928) was filmed in the Cheviot Hills area of Los Angeles. The house #laurelandhardy were building in the film was located at 2830 Motor Avenue (destroyed after filming). The hospital building (2728 McConnell Drive) still stands today.
