I recall instances where what was said was wrong - as in the opposite or not the same as what was meant - but because of the conversation, what was actually meant by the speaker was understood, rather than what was actually said.
Those were fun to explain to people who hadn't seen the conversation.
As a former transcriber, I've typed up many a political interview. This is far from unique, yet when you see the interview in context, it makes much more sense. Transcribing can often hide the tone of a conversation, as well as remove visual cues from body language.
I don't think the English in general have a good idea of what being English is, when separated from the other nations.
Seems churlish therefore to have a go at someone who recognises that & would prefer to discuss it & form a consensus.
Especially given England's woeful perception abroad.
