I think I am inadvertently training the almost 6 yo to be a lawyer with our nightly bedtime struggles as she keeps trying to lawyer her way out of bedtime routine rules.

Cuts, Commitments and Contradictions – guest post by Lucien Heurtier Over the past week, three key meetings brought together members of the Particle Physics, Astronomy, and Nuclear Physics (PPAN) community with ministers, Members of Parliament, and representatives of UKRI and STFC. Happy International Women's Day!

Perfect time for me to (re)share our white paper on increasing the retention of women in professional astrophysics (really full of suggestions that broaden participation in academic science in general).

There are plenty of national reasons for more immigration! Eg the national growth mission!

I am certainly not canvassing for lab votes here, but the entire article the word “migration” (and variations) appeared literally once, in the paragraph I pasted and “migration in national interest” means whatever you think national interests are…

I think his point is that Lab’s obsession with immigration is both losing voters like you and not addressing the core economic insecurity of the “hero voters”. I read it as a repudiation of Mahmood’s strategy actually although obviously he can’t be too unsubtle about it.

Who actually were the Hero Voters? Labour won in 2024 because of economically insecure voters, not social conservatism.

Have been a bit frustrated by some of the conversation about Labour's voter coalition.

I've written about who the "Hero Voters" actually were, how we won them, and what we need to do to earn their support next time.

7/ The central hypothesis is that growing regional inequality in the past 30 years has created ‘two deprivations’ These are set out in the table below. The former pull left, the latter pull right.

Our approach, unlike that of the Greens and Reform, is in step with the British people. They don't want extremes - they want a system that is managed and fair

This is a hot mess of outright lies and misinformation from the Home Secretary, designed to try and persuade people that a government which is implementing some of the most hostile anti-immigration/asylum policies, in practice, for decades is progressive. 1/

Scintillating performance from both physicists and MPs earlier today at the SITC hearing. Glad I was there in person.

Here is my run-down of today's Science, Information & Technology Committee hearing (House of Commons) where @jonbutterworth.bsky.social @si-wills.bsky.social & I argued for no funding cuts, & Prof. Michele Doughtery explained why they were needed. The public gallery again packed with physicists 🔭👩‍🔬⚛️

I agree that it is puzzling (indeed when I saw it I had exactly the same thoughts). My guess is that they are suffering from cash flow problems. I didn’t ask them.

The latter is what I thought too. Or having cash flow problems (which sadly many independent cafes are going through).

10% for cash payments what my local cafe is offering though. The pub story might be fake but this is not implausible.
