His lie/word ratio was amazingly high there. He should just say that he finds trans people icky.

Republicans really love to take away civil rights. This is sick.

The Gender Politics of Abandoning Your Girlfriend on a Mountain
The Gender Politics of Abandoning Your Girlfriend on a Mountain YouTube video by Rebecca Watson (Skepchick)

"Man convicted of manslaughter after girlfriend dies hiking in winter storm" sounds insane until you get into the details.

He put an inexperienced hiker into harm's way despite explicit warnings and waved away numerous attempts to rescue her! The punishment was too lax here, not too severe.

Five years ago, worries about sparse digital competition were well founded. A handful of giants β€” Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft β€” dominated the tech economy. Most major product categories had only two or three serious competitors, such as search (Google and Microsoft’s Bing) and mobile operating systems (Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android). When new markets like cloud computing emerged, incumbents quickly took control.

There are no lazy monopolists in the A.I. space coasting on past advantages. Over the past year, the top spot on the Arena leaderboard has moved among those three companies, with strong performances from newer arrivals such as the Chinese company DeepSeek and the French firm Mistral β€” many of which require far less capital than earlier generations of A.I. companies.

Shorter Jason Furman: it used to be that the tech industry was dominated by only five companies. But AI has changed all that: now there's open competition from five whole companies!

Seriously, 12 step rooms are filled with bio-hackers. We just used to call it β€œself-medicating.”

as far as i can tell β€œbio hacking” is just a goofy term for giving yourself some combination of an eating disorder and a drug addiction

Like... this... is exactly what trans people have been saying was going to happen for years.

The short clip has gone viral with people making out it shows something very different

For 3 days a group of Americans came and stood near a Mosque and called Muslims sinful, criminals full of anger and hatred

And the worst that happened was some Muslims asked the police why that was allowedπŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Musk is a malevolent force in American life, driven by white nationalism and incredibly influential given his obscene wealth. He's a supervillain.

But people get that. He's deeply unpopular, with an approval rating in the mid-30s with Trump. We just need political leaders willing to take him on.

slavery is one of the rare things historically where the more you learn about it the more you realize your initial assessment was correct and it was in fact one of the most evil things ever to occur

Why MAGA Wants You to Think Slavery Wasn’t That Bad
Both the left and the right try to co-opt it, but the real story of American slavery doesn’t serve any one faction.

Sanitizing slavery has become a core objective of the reactionary right under Donald Trumpβ€”a malignant response to the progressive left’s oversimplification of American history for their own present-day ends.

In Iowa, Prosecutors Want to Bring Back Court Fees as Bargaining Chips - Bolts Iowa's high court recently ended the practice of making defendants pay fees for charges that get dismissed. Prosecutors are backing legislation to undo the court’s ruling so they can keep using fees a...

NEW: In Iowa, when someone's charges are *dismissed,* they still had to pay court fees. So prosecutors pressured ppl into pleading guilty: 'plead guilty, you'll have no fees. (If you win, you'll owe $$.)'

Iowa's Supreme Court struck that down in January... but prosecutors want to bring it all back:

really interesting to me how many professional political commentators have basically retconned the draconian immigration enforcement policies of Obama and Biden out of existence and have completely swallowed the right wing narrative of immigration enforcement

step 1: hire philosophers in your chatbot company

step 2: train the chatbot to generate results based on materials the philosophers are familiar with

step 3: the chatbot generates those results

step 4: sentience??????

To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the β€˜nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.

An observation I've been thinking about:

Around 2020, we were told that US political & corporate elites had been gripped by "wokeness" & thus become obsessed with climate change & diversity. This wokeness was alleged to be so severe & monomaniacal that it threatened the entire culture & economy.

Video: Opinion | β€˜The Mistake of Feminism’ Is it possible to support women while also opposing abortion? The pro-life activist Lila Rose argues yes. The key, she says, is to acknowledge that men and women are inherently different.

Love this. Love that we live in a world where the dumbest, most evil motherfuckers alive get to monologue incoherently into a microphone for 3 minutes and it's published verbatim on the website of the nation's most prestigious newspaper. Great work everyone

To recap the White House's official position, the racist video was posted erroneously by a staffer and they took it down, but even if it was posted on purpose, the outrage would have been fake because the post was fine and inspired by the Lion King

After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.
