After work, I had to DoorDash to pay for our motel room. I brought my toddler with me to avoid childcare costs. A South Carolina mom lived in a $60-a-night motel and took her toddler on DoorDash runs to make ends meet. She can afford a mobile home now.

From one perspective, this is a story about grit and determination.

From another, it's a damning portrait of a country where someone working full-time at $11/hour lives in a $60-a-night motel with her toddler—then spends evenings DoorDashing with her kid because affordable childcare is nonexistent.

I’ve been wanting to do that lol. I’m not super eager to join any Discord servers for it though, after less-than-great experiences in some others. So, I’ve kind of accepted it’s not happening.

Alaska is great! I wish I still lived there. Would give my right eye to be able to move back.

(Sadly, housing is tough to come by and most employers won’t give you the time of day if you don’t already live there, no matter how happy you’d be to relocate.)

Okay, I ANAL, but how would one do this? Presumably the dividend is taxable now because of provisions in the federal tax code, right? Would it necessitate changing the classification of the dividend somehow? I can’t see that going unchallenged.

We now have three years of post-ULA permitting data to compare to pre-ULA, and...it's not good. Average annual building permits issued in LA City have fallen by 1/3 since the measure passed. If you think this is due to macro factors, look at the rest of the county and state - doing mostly fine.

As a person who’s really really good at Excel and has been unemployed for (essentially) 3+ straight years despite thousands of applications, I wish it were this simple.

These companies are often paying ppl more than they’d ever pay a person (I’ve seen $90-$150/hr for my own skill set) to teach an AI to replace a person.

ADDENDUM: Discord also does not provide (at least as far as I saw) any instructions or information regarding how to view the files they provide. “You can view a JSON file in Notepad, even though it might be difficult to read” is not something everyone knows!

That’s what I ended up doing, and I was able to glean the information I wanted—but I dare say I’m mildly more adept at reading that output than many people would be. (And there were bits in that output that even I needed guidance from others to understand correctly.)

They send you a JSON file. They don’t serve it as a text file, because they don’t serve it at all. But given that most users don’t have a JSON parser installed (even I didn’t), the most accessible way for most users to read the file is to open it in Notepad.

Hilariously, point 1 is *almost* what Discord does if you request your own user data. I did it about a month ago.

At times it’s been a multiple-times-a-week occurrence for me in groups where I have cause to regularly post screenshots. It’s “you’re the fifth person in the last hour to tell that same joke, but the cashier has to pretend it’s original,” except the joke is inherently demeaning.

And this isn’t really the point, but it’s not entirely NOT related either:

It sucks how socially acceptable it’s become to publicly shame people who use light mode, just as long as one does it in a “joking” manner.

"The poor deserve endless cruelty and punishment for being poor" is a foundational belief of this social order, across political parties, among liberals and conservatives. It is evil and unforgivable.

If this laptop dies, I'm so fucked. I can't afford a new one and without it can't even apply for jobs. (Even libraries around here are only operative on very limited hours these days, and don't let me use any of my own documents like resumes.)

My laptop specs, which should be sufficient to run this game at lowest settings without cooking itself. There is an overlayed heat gauge suggesting it is indeed cooking itself.

Like, yeah, it's not the greatest machine in the world, to put it mildly. But it should be able to handle this on lowest settings. Odd that it's not.
