okay idk how much you know about vietnam (im vietnamese) but for as conservative as PAVN is, PubSec is infinitely worse, they are like, extremely anti democracy and engineered the enormous online crackdowns of the 2010s and 20s and are pretty intent on destroying what little remains

I do think some of the analysis here is a bit American-centric, with an inability to understand why a Vietnam which has just seen *gestures wildly at the last year* is still cautious about American intentions. Vietnamese leadership has always been very cautious in their foreign policy

To Lam has been installing personal loyalists in key regional party positions, combining ministries to centralize control, hardcore cracked down on dissent, in the recent NC opened the way for combination of all top positions, and also installed Nguyen Tan Dung’s evil-ass kids and proteges

theyre less authoritarian than the current leadership, which is centralizing around the Ministry of Public Security in a very Xi-style way, eschewing the collective leadership model

do note that these “communist hardliners” in PAVN are by far the good guys here, they’re way less authoritarian than the current leader, To Lam of public security fame
