Asombrada con coches yendo a 120+km/h en carreteras de 60 con señales alertando de radares. Me explicaron que aunque haya señales, nadie hace caso porque no eran señales "de verdad".
Yo hice Catania, Etna, Taormina, Palermo, Selinunte, Agrigento y Siracusa.
Viviendo en Catania aprendí que las señales y líneas de la calzada eran meramente decorativas. Y que los pasos de peatones eran los sitios donde era más probable que me atropellaran. Que caben cinco carriles aquí donde hay tres pintados? Vamos allá. Calle de un solo sentido? Voy por la acera 🤷🏻♀️
Yo pasé un verano en Sicilia en 2016, y lo rematé alquilando un coche y dando la vuelta a la isla. Todavía tengo flashbacks de aquello.

Apparently surface rupture during the Myanmar 2025. I'm very surprised by the weak shaking along the rupture. I'm not sure if this is the main rupture (I would say no - nonetheless, VERY COOL). Author unknown, location Thazi (to be confirmed)

It extends far to the south, much further than initially thought. Suggests that large part of segment broken in 1930 (Pyu quake) broke again. In addition to 1839 one of course.

This is an excellent post, summarizing the scientific data from the Myanmar earthquake. The long fault and close proximity to major cities indicate a high level of damage and we should expect the death toll to rise. But the ongoing civil war near Mandalay suggests we may never know.

I've asked a lot of people what it was like for them. Lots of different experiences, and yet so much in common. What was yours like?
I still think about this, and wonder what things would be like had #covid not happened, but I guess today's conversations made me think of it more than usual.
We came back to a completely different world. In my case, to my PhD, which I had to try to finish amidst a global pandemic that changed everything forever. Today, my partner was telling me about the start of the pandemic in London, and what it was like for him, and I'm still mind-blown.
We had spent the previous months at the Spanish research stations in Antarctica, watching the pandemic unfold from the distance, before being evacuated in a hurry. We eventually made it home, as this great article by @squigglyvolcano.bsky.social tells.

Five years ago I was in a ship in the south Atlantic Ocean, trying to get home before the entire world shut down. I remember walking around the deck, marveling at the albatrosses and petrels flying around the ship, while also feeling anxious looking at the news and wondering if we'd make it home.
People have been talking a lot today about it being the fifth anniversary of the first #covid #lockdown in the UK. Weirdly, it feels like it was both yesterday and ages ago.
Hearing about people's memories made me think of how incredibly different my own experience was, at least in the beginning.
