How do you differentiate the migrating robins from those that choose to ride out the winter? I assume you have a few that stick around through the Calgary winter.
I know, right?

It doesn't matter how interesting your seminar at 1:40 pm is, I am probably going to spend 10 minutes fighting to stay conscious and attentive. But I'm better than the old entomology prof I had who would fall asleep (for real) mid-sentence, then pick up exactly where he left off 20 minutes later.
All I can say is it's a bloody good thing that I am not in some sort of high office position in front of cameras. Folks would be catching me nodding off so often it would be a national embarrassment. The only way I stay awake in class is that I teach the class.
Yup, that was a worthy interruption to me listening to Nightwaves on the CFCR archive.
Listening to the @cfcrcommunity.bsky.social Nightwaves archives at work is pretty awesome. Ron Spizziri is a national hero. Jeff is good too, but if there's a Ron fan club, I'd be in it (his Hot Buttered Soul lunchtime program is also great).
Garage rock is the best rock.

Maybe CBC should have someone who knows how to pronounce "nuclear" as part of their panel.
View of a tall hill at Saskatchewan Landing with a trail heading toward the peak.
Steep hills at Saskatchewan Landing with a smattering of snow. Lake Diefenbaker is in the background.
Rough and icy trail heading toward a hilltop. It's steeper than it looks.
Snowy icy narrow trail following the spine of a hilltop.
What kind of jerk builds trails up these hills? And what sort of idiot decides to run up them? And what sort of absolute fool decides to wear regular trail shoes and leave the spiked shoes in the car? (I went for a trail run today at Saskatchewan Landing.)
Hauling loaded toboggans on a snowmobile trail in the northern Saskatchewan forest. It's warm and the trail is packed - the snowshoes and outer layers are strapped to the sleds.
Northern lights seen over Iskwatikan Lake. A lone jackpine creates a silhouette against the bright green of the aurora.
A poor photo of Nistowiak Falls in the winter.
Canvas hot tent in the dark, lit from within. Snowshoes are standing in the foreground.
A few photos. Head to the linked blog post above for many more.
Last week I spent a few days camping in northern Saskatchewan. We trekked in to Nistowiak Falls from Stanley Mission.

Well, shit.
Dr. Ryan Brook @ryankbrook.bsky.social, moose talker.
Shit. So many good people and so much good work being affected. I was talking to some Ag Canada friends last week and the mood was not good. Fingers crossed for you and everyone being impacted.
Beekeepers take note.
@ryankbrook.bsky.social, is there a way to work this into your Animal Agriculture and the Environment class?
You know whoβstayed a little backβ in VIetnam? DJT.
Selfie with just the eyes exposed. I'm wearing a balaclava, toque, yellow cycling rain jacket and several layers underneath. Sunglasses are iced up and propped on top of my head and my whole head is covered in frost. The river and bridge are in the background in bright sunshine.
Ice fog rising from the South Saskatchewan River in sunshine.
Frosty white riverbank and open water on the river.
Ice fog over open water. Hard to see in the photo but there are sheets of newly forming ice flowing in the current.
I do it for the icicle eyelashes. Short easy run along the South Saskatchewan River at lunch and it is a beautiful cold day.
If eider down is a great insulator, imagine how warm whole eiders must be!
Not to mention the more than 40,000 Canadians who went to Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11. 158 died.

I just realized the cover of Kate Weekes' latest album shows a canoe with a paddler. Kate is a folk musician (and friend, canoeist, dog sledder, ...) who has played basement concerts twice at my house. Check out her latest album Rideau Roots on Bandcamp. kateweekes.bandcamp.com/album/rideau...
FFS. Why do you try to ruin my day?
It's even portable!
