Nighttime picture of a human-established watering hole in the Namib Desert. It's round, apparently concrete, with a small concrete "island" in the center, and there is an owl at the edge, which we see from behind. The owl's wings are folded against its body in a manner that suggests a short jacket; its legs look like the owl is wearing white stockings, and its head is turned to the left; we can see one eye (shining in the watering hole's low light), and a very little bit of its beak.
ok but why does this owl at a watering hole in the Namib desert (which I saw via the watering hole's webcam) look like a little old English lady-owl on an evening walk who kicked off her shoes but left her stockings on to cool her feet in a pond on the outskirts of the village?

So interesting! They've spent decades resting in little bunny wallows under the apple tree. This is the first time we've seen this, so someone really made themselves at home π

Ok, Brain Trust. What critter is hanging out in my mom's garden in Edmonton? It clipped all the iris leaves and then made a cozy little impression in the middle.

Writer Julia Zarankin used to be a βnormal person.β Now, she finds herself cancelling all non-bird-related social engagements, descending deeper into what experts call birder derangement syndrome. Here, she explores why sheβs at her best when birding: thewalrus.ca/birding/

A map shows Cuckoo Frederic's migration from the UK across Europe, then over the Sahara Desert in Africa. A headshot of Cuckoo Frederic features, with an airhorn graphic above which holds the wording: Cuckoo Update. Frederic crosses the Sahara Desert.
Cuckoo Frederic is on the move and has crossed the Sahara! π
Frederic had been hanging around in France while his fellow satellite-tagged Cuckoos had made it to Africa. He finally set off south around 17 September & heβs now conquered crossing the Sahara Desert in Africa! π #Ornithology #Birds

A white and dark gray shorebird struts along in front of the blurry ocean in the background. The wet sand reflects the adorable bird.
